Brazilian stars back on the sand ahead of 2014 season

Gustavo Carvalhaes (left) and Allison Cittadin have already begun preparations for 2014 after enjoying a successful time in 2013
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, January 7, 2014 – Brazil’s men and women are already back on the beach in preparation for the up-coming 2014 beach volleyball season.

Male and female teams began their preparations on Monday January 6 under the watchful eye of technical director Leticia Pessoa and head coach Marcos Miranda at the Saquarema Volleyball Development Centre and the nearby Army Physical Education School.

Among the men present was FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships silver medallist Alvaro Filho and FIVB U21 world champions Gustavo Carvalhaes and Allison Cittadin. The women’s group features FIVB U19 world champion Eduarda Santos Lisboa, who also won silver at the inaugural FIVB U23 World Championships.

“We are going through a rebuilding phase and giving the chance to some young players who have taken their opportunities,” Leticia Pessoa said. “Gustavo Carvalhaes and Allison Cittadin were world champions and have played well on the Brazilian Tour. The likes of Alvaro Filho and some others are already familiar with our selection system and what titles we want to pursue.”

Brazil’s teams enjoyed a successful FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour in 2013; Talita Antunes and Taiana Lima won the women’s rankings title, while Pedro Salgado and Bruno Schmidt finished second in the men’s rankings.

At the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships, Mazury 2013, Ricardo Santos and Alvaro Filho won silver, while Liliane Maestrini and Barbara Seixas claimed women’s bronze. There were also a number of successes in the FIVB age-group tournaments.
Ahead of the start of the 2014 FIVB season at the Fuzhou Open in China from April 22-27, Brazil’s players will be competing on the South American tour. The first stage takes place in Macae in Brazil from January 24-26.

“Our work in 2014 continues what was put in place in 2013,” Leticia Pessoa added. “A new selection system was introduced and after the good results we enjoyed last year the hope is that this season we will do even better. However, we know that other countries have evolved and will make it even tougher for us.”
