August 25, 2003 - The Beach Volleyball test event for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, the 2003 Men's Greek Beach Volleyball Challenger, which finished on Sunday, has left FIVB officials impressed.
An FIVB delegation attended the event to scrutinize everything from organization, the competition structure and transportation to player's facilities, the sand and the overall presentation as part of the FIVB's stringent preparation programme building up to next year's Olympics.
FIVB Beach Volleyball coordinator Angelo Squeo said the event, which was won by the Italian pair Fabio Galli and Riccardo Fenili, was a great occasion to test many functional areas of the organization and the venue.
"The venue is fantastic and the tournament was in general, very positive although we realized there are several areas to improve such as the sand, the presentation and the provision of a contingency court," he said. "But I am certain these areas will be addressed and we are looking forward to an excellent Beach Volleyball competition, come August next year at the Olympics."
Athens 2004 Executive Director Marton SIMITSEK also expressed his satisfaction. "We are very pleased with the Beach Volley Sport Event but the aim was to allow us to conduct an exercise, so that we can get to know the venue and record all the details, so that we may work on those from now on." |
