Lausanne, Switzerland, June 17, 2013 – Continuing to set the pace as the world’s foremost beach volleyball country, teams from Brazil lead both the men and women’s point standings in 2013 FIVB international competition following last week’s FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Hague Grand Slam in The Hague, Netherlands. Beginning a new Olympic cycle in 2013, the four FIVB international men’s events have been won by a different and new team in each event.
Riding atop the men’s season point standings is Brazil’s new team of Pedro Salgado/Bruno Oscar Schmidt while leading the women’s action is another new Brazilian team, Talita Antunes/Taiana Lima as the 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour returns to Italy this week for the $440,000 FIVB Rome Grand Slam, round four of the 10-event 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour of double-gender grand slam competitions. The event in Rome will be held Wednesday through Sunday.
The third double gender Grand Slam event on the 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour was held this past week with the $440,000 FIVB Hague Grand Slam in The Hague, Netherlands. For the fourth consecutive event a new men’s partnership for the 2013 season won their first FIVB World Tour/Open event together as Brazil’s Pedro Salgado/Bruno Oscar Schmidt defeated Aleksandrs Samoilovs/Janis Smedins of Latvia for the gold medal. It was Salgado’s 12th FIVB World Tour victory and the first for Schmidt.
On the women’s side, Brazil’s Talita Antunes/Taiana Lima won their second FIVB World Tour event of the season with a two-set win over sisters Carolina and Maria Clara Salgado of Brazil. It was Antunes’ 15th career FIVB international victory and second for Lima.
With all beach volleyball roads leading to Rome this week, in men’s competition, Brazil’s Salgado/Schmidt have collected 2,380 points and lead USA’s second-place Jake Gibb/Casey Patterson by 130 points and Latvia’s third-place Janis Smedins/Aleksandrs Samoilovs by 260 points. In the season earnings race, Brazil’s Salgado/Schmidt lead with 71,275, followed by USA’s Gibb/Patterson with $67,000, and Latvia’s Smedins/Samoilovs with $61,700.
In 2013 FIVB women’s international competition, Brazil’s Antunes/Lima lead with 2,250 points and $73,500 in earnings.
Second in both categories is Madelein Meppelink/Sophie van Gestel with 2,110 points and $55,900 while third is the Brazilian sister team of Maria Claria Salgado/Carolina Salgado with 2,100 points and $55,000 in earnings.
Statistically in FIVB men’s international competition, Brazil’s Salgado/Schmidt duo has a 21-6 match record so far for a 77.8% winning percentage. Based on winning percentage to date, USA’s Gibb/Patterson tandem is first at 83.3% (20-4), followed by Latvia’s Smedins/Samoilovs at 81.8% (18-4), USA’s Sean Rosenthal/Phil Dalhausser at 80.0% (12-3) and Poland’s Grzegorz Fijalek/Mariusz Prudel at 78.3% (18-5).
This year in FIVB women’s international play, Brazil’s Antunes/Lima duo has the second highest winning percentage at 87.0% (20-3) as China’s Chen Xue/Xi Zhang have only played twice so far and have a 91.7% (11-1) to lead. Third is Germany’s Katrin Holtwick/Ilka Semmler at 79.2% (19-5), followed by Brazil’s Salgado sisters at 76.9% (17-5) and USA’s Jennifer Kessy/April Ross at 75.0% (15-5).
On the FIVB men’s international season scorecard, USA’s Sean Rosenthal (Fuzhou), USA’s Gibb/Patterson (Shanghai), Latvia’s Smedins/Samoilovs (Corrientes) and Brazil’s Salgado/Schmidt (The Hague) each have one gold medal.
On the FIVB women’s international season scorecard, Brazil’s Antunes/Lima (Shanghai, The Hague) have two gold medals while China’s Xue/Zhang (Fuzhou) and Netherlands’ van Gestel/Meppelink (Corrientes) each have one gold medal so far this season.

the 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World
Championships. Not part of the World Tour but still counting towards the FIVB
World Rankings, the FIVB yearly calendar
also includes seven Open events throughout the world to help open the door for
development of the sport.
The 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour will end in Brazil with the $440,000 FIVB São Paulo Grand Slam to be held October 9-13.
