Kubala back on the sand after surgery

Czech player Premysl Kubala back on the Tour after surgery

The Hague, The Netherlands, June 13, 2103 – Premysl Kubala is back on the sand after months of surgery and recovery. The 39-year old Czech player and his partner Petr Benes returned to the FIVB World Tour at the Transavia Grand Slam in The Hague this week. Their last event dated back to the Grand Slam in Stare Jablonki in August.

After Stare Jablonki Kubala underwent three operations on his throat. “Years ago I had a tumour removed, but after that my vocal cords stuck together and after the Olympics I was not able to speak anymore.”

Whisper

The surgery went well, but his voice is not much more than a whisper. “It gets worse after playing, but I am glad I can still speak. Lots of people that have this operation are not able to talk anymore.”

When the Czech veterans finally started training again, Kubala injured his meniscus and had to undergo another operation, this time on his knee. “So this is our first tournament. We are not in shape, I was not able to play indoor this winter like I usually do and we only started training again two weeks ago.”

Good moments but still lacking confidence

Kubala and Benes lost their first two pool matches against Germany’s Dollinger/Windscheif and Brazil’s Pedro/Bruno, but in both games they managed to win a set. “We still have some good moments because some things still go automatically and we have played so many years together, but due to the lack of training I am missing confidence in attacking and I don’t feel strong in blocking.”

The Czech team uses the Transavia The Hague Grand Slam and the Grand Slam in Rome as preparation for the World Championships in Stare Jablonki early July. “We will start in qualification in Rome, but at the World Championship we are sure of main draw. After that we will see and make a decision if we go on or not.”
