Continental Cup back underway as Rio dream draws closer

The FIVB Continental Cup provides an opportunity for countries to qualify for the Olympic Games in addition to the 16 vacancies offered on the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour

Lausanne, Switzerland, November 4, 2015 – The FIVB Continental Cup will come back into focus over the next few months as each Confederation begins the countdown to their continental finals in 2016 and the chance for teams to earn a place at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games.

The eventual winners of each of the five Beach Volleyball Continental Cups will earn quotas for the Rio 2016 beach volleyball tournament, while another two countries will have a second opportunity to qualify for Rio via the intercontinental final round that will also be held in 2016.

The tournament began with sub-zonal competitions in 2014 and will conclude with Continental finals in 2016. As per the first edition that took place ahead of the London 2012 Olympic Games, each country’s delegation will consist of two pairs competing in a team-style competition in which countries, rather than pairings are represented.

Currently the Oceania Zone in the Asian Confederation are playing their finals in Rarotonga, the Cook Islands and in two weeks the West Asia zone will play their finals in Doha, Qatar.

In Europe the 16 qualifiers for the Continental Finals have already been decided and they will compete in Stavanger, Norway in June 2016.

Austria, Russia, Spain, Italy, Germany, Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, Lithuania, Sweden and France, Finland, Greece, Poland and Slovakia will compete in the women’s competition.

In the men’s the Czech Republic, Norway, Spain, Italy, Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, Turkey, France, Austria, Latvia, Russia, Greece, Switzerland, Belgium and Estonia will compete for the place in Rio.

NORCECA, the North and Central America and Caribbean competition are into the regional finals stage, as are the African Confederation, CAVB and the South American Confederation, CSV.

The Beach Volleyball Continental Cup was formulated by FIVB President Dr Ary S. Graça F° in 2008 during his time as head of the beach volleyball commission. The intention was to provide further competition for developing nations and give opportunities for players and officials to further their understanding of the sport.

President Graça underlined the fact that since the 2012 Olympic Games in London, the number of nations competing to qualify for the next Games in Rio has risen by 51 nations to nearly 200.

“The Continental Cup has been one of the most successful ways to broaden volleyball and from which all of you are directly benefiting from,” he said to delegates at the most recent FIVB Congress.

The first edition of the Continental Cup ahead of London 2012 featured 143 countries participating in 71 tournaments staged courtesy of 54 organisers.

It resulted in places for teams from Venezuela and Argentina, Japan and Australia, Norway and Russia, South Africa and Mauritius and a male and female Canadian team. Russia (men and women), Austria (men) and the Netherlands (women) also booked places through the FIVB World Cup Olympic Qualification, which has since been renamed the FIVB Beach Volleyball Continental Cup.
