LAUSANNE, SWITZERLAND, September 6, 2008 - The “final four” is set on the Mediterranean island of Mallorca while Brazil and Germany will compete for the gold medal in Poland as the SWATCH FIVB World Tour continued Saturday at two European sites. While the 2008 SWATCH-FIVB Junior World Championships by Nivea Sun for players under the age of 21 is being staged this week in Brighton, England, the SWATCH FIVB World Tour was held at two sites Saturday with Myslowice hosting the women in Poland and Mallorca staging a men stop with each tournament featuring US$175,000 in prize money. Brighton, England, September 6, 2008 - Sophie Van Gestel and Michelle Stiekema made it a “double Dutch delight” here Saturday as the 23rd-seeded team from the Netherlands advanced to the women’s semi-finals of SWATCH-FIVB Junior World Championships with compatriots Marleen Van Iersel and Daniëlle Remmers. After qualifying Wednesday with a pair of victories at the Nivea Sun Yellowave, the first permanent beach sports venue in the United Kingdom, Van Gestel and Stiekema won two of three pool play matches Thursday and Friday to captured their group before posting a pair of wins Saturday during the elimination phase of the competition. Brighton, England, September 6, 2008 - With 142 participants from 26 countries at the 2008 SWATCH-FIVB Junior World Championships, the results from this week’s event for players under the age of 21 will have an impact on the London 2012 Olympic Games. With the SWATCH-FIVB Junior World Championships by Nivea Sun being the first Beach Volleyball tournament in United Kingdom involving more than one of the five FIVB confederations since the start of the international competition in 1987, most of the conversations at the Nivea Sun Yellowave complex includes discussions about the London 2012 Olympic Games.
