PLAYER PROFILE

Brazil's  LOIOLA

Jose Geraldo Loiola is not only one of the best Beach Volleyballers on the World Tour, he is also well-known for his legendary emotional outbreaks on the court. He practically grew up on the fabulous beaches of Brazil and started to play indoor Volleyball at the age of 15. He played professionally in Brazil from 1987 to 1989 before turning to Beach Volleyball. He eventually went to the USA to play on the AVP tour and in 1997 he was voted `Most Valuable Player of the AVP Tour`. It was the first time for a non-American player to receive this award.

Loiola lived in Manhattan Beach for more than nine years before he started his international FIVB career together with partner Emanuel. What followed was history in this young and dynamic sport. He played three seasons with Emanuel, before teaming up with his partner Ricardo at the beginning of 2000. Now it is not a matter of how many times Loiola has been on the podium; in fact he has rarely been off it. His list of honors includes 20 gold medals from 59 international FIVB tournaments and a string of minor places as well.
His former partner Emanuel says he has a "winner personality" and doesn't like to lose. "I think none of the players like to lose, the difference to me maybe is that I express my feelings," says Loiola. He is one of the most outgoing personalities on the international circuit and is a regular Center Court attraction, answering the spectators´ demands not only for sporting excellence but also a good show.
"I don't hide myself; I am what I am and I am very proud of it," says Loiola. He also sees Beach Volleyball not only as top-level sport, but also as entertainment and himself as an entertainer. "If I stop being like that it's time to stop playing," he adds. Although he is highly competitive, Loiola still claims fun is the key element of the game. "I am out there to do something I like."
Loiola is married and has three daughters with his American wife. The youngest one, Priscilla, was born when he was on his way to pick up yet another gold medal, this time at the Canadian Open in Montreal. "After one of my matches an official came to me to tell me that my daughter was born," he said. After the final he left to return to Los Angeles to spend four hours with his newborn daughter, before leaving for the next tournament in Marseilles, France.

In his spare time Loiola loves to go to the beach with his family and spend some time riding his horses on his Brazilian ranch. Asked if he wants his three children to become Beach Volleyballers like him, he says, "For sure I will not push them, but it would be nice."
