 With partner and Brazilian countryman Márcio, Benjamin has developed into one of the most versatile players on the SWATCH FIVB World Tour. Their world ranking at the end of 2002 of No 2 was a reflection of four years of hard work and determination.
Benjamin has become one of shining lights of what is the star-studded Brazilian volleyball fraternity. He has burnt up the world circuit with a huge attacking game mixed with sound defence, especially in the last three years and this was recognized in 2000 and 2002 at home when he was named the Brazilian player of the year.
The tanned, gangly 30-year-old doesn't resemble his age, he's often mistaken for being younger, a well-worn and potentially fallible view many of his opponents have taken.
Since converting from volleyball in 1989 Benjamin has pleased many a crowd with his spell bounding on court performances and that that's where he likes to do his talking - on court.
"I don't like to openly express my thoughts and sometimes I find myself in a bad mood. But that is just me and I don't think that it has anything to do with my game," he said. His partner Márcio agrees. "Benjamin is not an easygoing person, but we never had problems on that issue. We get along very well together and besides, he is an outstanding player. He is a very complete player and is able to analyze exactly what is happening on the other side of the court. Most of the time I follow what he tells me to do."
Benjamin will be looking for the same recipe this year, especially in such an important pre-Olympic year. "That is a wonderful feeling. It pushes me even further to go after my biggest dream: to represent my country in the Olympic Games in Athens next year. Márcio and I are working very hard to get there."
