Baracetti grew up immersed in sport.
Both his parents were Physical Education teachers and
he hung out in a sports club playing a range of
sports.
"When I was a kid I played all kinds of sports -
basketball, tennis, football, but I decided on
volleyball when I was 12," he said. Mariano went
on to make the Under-16 and Under 18 teams and looked
set for a career on the indoor scene. Then, when he
made the squad for the senior team, but missed final
selection to play in the Pan American Games in 1995,
he decided for a complete change."I spent my 21st
birthday on the plane going to Spain and that was when
I started my real career in Beach," he said. He
still plays indoor Volleyball in the off-season and
hopes to sign with a European Club in the winter of
2002-3.
Baracetti
is a great admirer of Beach icons Karch Kiraly
and Sinjin Smith. "I used to watch them
closely and then try to imitate they way they
played," he said. "Even today I am a
bit nervous to play against Sinjin." Now
45, Smith was still competing in some events
last season.
When asked about his success, Baracetti says the
good "chemistry" he shares with
partner Conde contributes a lot.
"We compliment each other," he said.
"That helps us, because being partners is a
bit like a marriage. You have to be together all
the time and you have to be able to count on one
another."
