Mariano Baracetti talks to FIVB

Quiet World Champion looking forward to the new season
Last year was a magic season for the gently spoken Argentine, Mariano Baracetti. In eight events he and his partner Martin Conde made the podium six times - including the gold medal at the Beach Volleyball World Championship in Klagenfurt, Austria and the silver medal at the Goodwill Games.
"It was wonderful," Mariano said, recalling Austria and his title. "The week of the competition I was thinking about what it would be like to win, and then suddenly it was us. I think perhaps only winning the Olympic gold would be better."
For many, living up to the level last year's success might be a tall order. Not so for Mariano, who is both humble and tranquil.
"Life has been very good to me, and I am able to take things as they come. Sometimes you win and things are going well, and then sometimes things are not so good." This tranquility, and a desire for balance in his life, gives him strength, he says.
Like many Beach players, Baracetti has been training in Teneriffe and he said he is considering moving there from his native Buenos Aires, where, with current economic crisis in the country is making life difficult for all Argentines.
"Martin already lives there and I am thinking of moving there with my wife," he said. "Many players are there in the winter. The weather is good and you can easily find players to practice with."

Baracetti grew up immersed in sport. Both his parents were Physical Education teachers and he hung out in a sports club playing a range of sports.

"When I was a kid I played all kinds of sports - basketball, tennis, football, but I decided on volleyball when I was 12," he said. Mariano went on to make the Under-16 and Under 18 teams and looked set for a career on the indoor scene. Then, when he made the squad for the senior team, but missed final selection to play in the Pan American Games in 1995, he decided for a complete change."I spent my 21st birthday on the plane going to Spain and that was when I started my real career in Beach," he said. He still plays indoor Volleyball in the off-season and hopes to sign with a European Club in the winter of 2002-3.

Baracetti is a great admirer of Beach icons Karch Kiraly and Sinjin Smith. "I used to watch them closely and then try to imitate they way they played," he said. "Even today I am a bit nervous to play against Sinjin." Now 45, Smith was still competing in some events last season.
When asked about his success, Baracetti says the good "chemistry" he shares with partner Conde contributes a lot.

"We compliment each other," he said. "That helps us, because being partners is a bit like a marriage. You have to be together all the time and you have to be able to count on one another."
