Having twice come so close to winning their first Swatch–FIVB World Tour gold medal in 2003, Jonas Reckermann and Markus Dieckmann have penciled in 2004 to erase those disappointments and few would argue against the Germans taking top honours at some stage during the season.

As if going down to Brazilian pair Benjamin Insfran and Marcio Henrique Araujo in a nailbiting final at the 2003 Swiss Open in Gstaad wasn’t a bitter pill to swallow, Reckermann and Dieckmann suffered at the hands of the very same team in the Spanish Open several months later in what has since been described as one of the closest and longest match-ups ever to take place on the Beach Volleyball Tour.

Yet being the true professionals that they are, the German giants failed to lose faith, and in search for an improved season they went to the beaches of Rio de Janeiro ahead of the 2004 Swatch–FIVB World Tour for some intensive training.

Jonas started to play Beach Volleyball some five years ago having previously played Volleyball for almost nine years. His team mate, Markus, first stepped out onto the sand in 1995 and played together with his brother Christoph until he teamed up with Jonas.

 


"We fit together in a perfect way in terms of our character and style of play,” Reckermann said. “Markus is the more impulsive player on the court, the one with the speedy feet. I am the calmer counterpart and have a good serve."
