TEAM PROFILE

Sonja Novakova and Eva Celbova

Together as a team since 1996, Sonja Novakova and Eva Celbova have become household names on the Swatch–FIVB World Tour. Their superb teamwork and uncanny understanding of each other’s game helped them achieve a podium finish at the 2003 Indonesian Open tournament in Bali. Expect this pair to dig deep in order to maintain their top 10 presence in 2004.

Relatively similar in height, Novakova and Celbova complement each other well on court, mixing up their game when it is needed. Both are superb readers of play and can frustrate any opponent regardless of ability.

Adding to their season high third-place finish in Bali, the Czechs also managed three fifths (Gstaad, Marseille and Klagenfurt) and a ninth place finish at the World Championships in Rio, all of which assisted in the duo reaching eighth position on the final 2003 Swatch-FIVB World Tour rankings.

Finishing eighth at the 2000 Olympic Games was one of many career highlights for Sonja Novakova and she will be thrilled with a repeat of that performance in Athens in August. “Athens will represent our second Olympic Games,” the Czech noted. “We were delighted to finish in eighth position in Sydney and to finish eighth again would be a fantastic achievement for us,” she added.

Both girls are sports mad and work hard throughout the season to maintain peak physical condition. When it’s time to wind down though, Sonja Novakova and Eva Celbova are in complete agreement that there is nothing better than relaxing in front of a good movie!
