TEAM PROFILE

Paul and Martin Laciga

Composed, concentrated and able to beat all comers on the Swatch – FIVB World Tour, the Laciga brothers, Paul and Martin, have been the epitome of consistency over the years. This Swiss combination, who first competed on the World Tour in 1995, are always capable of gold medal success because of their determination to give 100 percent in every event they enter.

They are renowned for being one of the most persistent teams on the Swatch-FIVB World Tour and their standing in the world rankings in recent years (2003 - 3rd, 2002 - 4th, 2001 - 2nd, 2000 - 2nd, 1999 - 4th, 1998 - 3rd and 1997 - 6th) is evidence of the amount of hard work they have put into the game. It is due, in part, to the great play and exposure of the Lacigas that Beach Volleyball has become so popular in their home country of Switzerland.

While other teams openly express themselves, communicate a lot and motivate each other, the Laciga brothers, apart from a few tactical calls, are very quiet on court and concentrate more on their play. They even prefer to take the contemplative approach during timeouts.

Throughout the early days of their partnership, there was too much communication and due to several overcharged emotional outbursts, they decided to limit their exchanges in order to avoid a negative scene. Now they restrict their shows of emotion on court where they perform as one of the most flamboyant partnerships on the Tour.
