TEAM PROFILE

Sascha Heyer and Markus Egger

A combination of forceful, aggressive energy with calm, controlled on court presence represents the successful Swiss side that is Sascha Heyer and Markus Egger.

Heyer, measuring 204cm, is one of the tallest players on the World Tour and is very strong when playing at the net. He is a powerful leader, who has also been known to raise his voice on court on quite a few occasions. Egger, on the other hand, represents the more placid and cool part of the team who is defensively efficient with a strong nerve.

Being one of three top teams from Switzerland in an Olympic year has caused some slight frustration to Heyer and Egger who ended the 2003 season behind counterparts the Laciga brothers and team Heuscher-Kobel.

And despite the lack of a World Tour title win together, these two athletes should not be written off for Olympic qualification. Heyer and Egger had undertaken a new coaching strategy in the lead up to the 2004 season, by practicing in Rome under the tutelage of the highly reputable trainer Marco Solustri and will be looking to make up substantial ground on their fellow Swiss competitors.

“We were playing by far one of our best seasons on the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour, placing among the world top 10, but we are still only the third best Swiss team,”
Heyer said referring to the frustration of last season.
