TEAM PROFILE

Niki Berger and Clemens Doppler

Combining just one year prior to their 2003 European Beach Volleyball Championship win, Austria’s number one team of Niki Berger and Clemens Doppler have quickly developed into one of the more formidable outfits on the Swatch – FIVB World Tour.

A seventh place finish on the final 2003 Swatch-FIVB World Tour standings confirmed the improvements the Berger-Doppler partnership has been making.

The left-armed Berger, at 30, is the elder statesman of the team with Doppler the mere baby at only 23 years-of-age, yet the mix of old and young has blended well to give all Austrians a superbly skilled unit to be proud of.

Berger started playing Volleyball in 1986 but began dabbling in Beach Volleyball in 1995. The charismatic Viennese, who finished ninth at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games with Oliver Tribe, made the change to join Doppler in 2002 and after a slow start managed to record some encouraging results in their first year.

Doppler, like Berger, began his career playing Volleyball and although he mixed playing Beach Volleyball and Volleyball from 1996 to 2001 it was with limited success.

Our recognition value has increased greatly,” Clemens Doppler said on the reaction following their European title triumph in 2003. “We were on the front page of three major daily newspapers, "Kurier", "Krone" and "Standard". That is usually only accomplished by skiers and football players, not by Beach Volleyball players.”
