TEAM PROFILE

Ana Paula and Sandra Pires

Although both Ana Paula Connelly and Sandra Tavares Pires Nascimento have been playing Beach Volleyball for over three years the star duo only came together as a team at the beginning of 2003 and were an instant success.

Four gold medals, four silver and two other top 10 finishes saw the Brazilian duo claim the Golden Sands Top Team Trophy for finishing the season as the top-ranked team on the 2003 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour.

Ana Paula and double world champion Sandra Pires, who at Sydney 2000, became the first woman to carry the Brazilian flag during the opening ceremony and complemented that by claiming the bronze medal with partner Adriana Samuel, are both former Volleyball players, with the former having been a three time World Grand Prix champion in 1994, 96 and 98, won bronze at the Atlanta Olympic Games and been awarded the best player of the 1994 World Cup award.

Despite their different backgrounds the two Brazilians have gelled into a superb combination with the outstanding skills at the net from Ana Paula, superbly matched by Sandra Pires’ back court urgency.

“We had been trying to play together since 2000,” Ana Paula said. “Our idea
was always to be together; therefore we find that we form a good team. Some people
have kindly said we are an ideal pair, but I do not think that two good players
necessarily make the best team".
