Two
in a row for Baracetti-Conde
Marseille 22 July - Marseille,
host of the highly successful 1999 Beach
Volleyball World Championships, was the
venue for the sixth World Tour event of
the year, Marseilles eighth since 1994.
The
Argentinean pairing of Baracetti-Conde
continued with their outstanding form of
Lignano, Italy to take
their second consecutive World Tour win.
Coming into the event seeded tenth, they
disposed of Heyer-Egger
M. (SUI) 2-0 (21-19, 21-18) in their first
match, then followed up with straight-set
wins over Roberto Lopes-Franco (BRA),
Kobel-Heuscher (SUI), Laciga P.-Laciga M.
(SUI) and Wong-Metzger (USA).
After
an even match against Brazilians Emanuel/Tande,
Baracetti and Conde made some crucial
defensive plays at the end of both sets to
win the match and their second final 2:0
(21-19, 21-19).
The
French audience was on its feet during a
one-and-a-half-hour marathon playoff
between two American teams for the third
place. Wong and Metzger finally taking the
third set against their countrymen Blanton
and Fonoimoana 2:1 (31-33, 21-13, 15-11).
