New champions crowned in Italy
Lignano Sabbiadoro, 15-July 2001 -
Baracetti-Conde (ARG) were crowned
champions of the 2001 Italy Open. This is
the first victory for the new team of
Baracetti-Conde in 2001. In the final the
Argentinean pair defeated Ricardo-Loiola
(BRA) 2-0 (21-17, 21-16) in 40 minutes.
Mariano Baracetti was awarded the Speedo
Trophy as the best player of the
tournament.
Today, over 12,000 spectators enjoyed
the perfect weather (32C and sunny), the
beautiful scenery of Lignano Sabbiadoro
and the spectacular play of the best beach
volleyball players in the world.
In the bronze medal match, Emanuel-Tande
(BRA) were victorious against the American
team of Wong-Metzger 2-0 (21-19, 21-12) in
38 minutes. This bronze medal is the fifth
consecutive medal for Emanuel-Tande in
five FIVB World Tour events in 2001.
In the first semi-final, earlier in the
day, Baracetti-Conde defeated Wong-Metzger
2-0 (21-15, 21-15) in 43 minutes while
Emanuel-Tande lost to Ricardo-Loiola 0-2
(17-21, 15-21) in 37 minutes in the second
semi-final.
