Three 2-0 Men's Pool Teams
Athens, Greece, August 16, 2004 - Teams from Argentina, Germany and Switzerland scored wins here Monday to improve their pool play records to 2-0 to move closer to the 16-team elimination rounds of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games Beach Volleyball Competition.

Led by 2004 European Champions Markus Dieckmann and Jonas Reckermann, the three teams along with nine other tandems in Pools D, E and F end their preliminary matches Wednesday while men's Pools A, B and C conclude Thursday at the 10,000-seat Olympic Beach Volleyball Complex.

Dieckmann and Reckermann scored a 21-16 and 21-15 win over Bjorn Berg and Simon Dahl of Sweden to remain unbeaten in Pool D. The Germans end pool play Wednesday against Vegard Hoidalen and Jorre Kjemperud, who scored a 16-21, 21-19 and 15-10 win over Ramon Hernandez and Raul Papaleo Monday morning.

Switzerland's Patrick Heuscher and Stefan Kobel posted their second Pool E win by defeating Julien Prosser and Mark Williams of Australia 16-21, 22-20 and 15-9. Heuscher and Kobel end pool play against Dain Blanton and Jeff Nygaard of the United States while Prosser and Williams play Canada's John Child and Mark Heese, who defeated Blanton and Nygaard 21-16 and 21-10 Monday afternoon.

Mariano Baracetti and Martin Conde took control of Pool F by defeating South Africa's Colin Pocock and Gershon Rorich 21-13 and 21-15. The 2-0 Argentineans play Greece's Thanassis Michalopoulos and Pavlos Beligratis at 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Portugal's Joao Brenha and Luis Maia downed the Greeks 21-14 and 21-19 Monday evening and play Pocock and Rorich Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. The Portugese have placed fourth at the last two Beach Volleyball Olympics in Atlanta and Sydney as they dropped the 1996 bronze medal match to Child and Heese.

The Round of 16 elimination matches for the men will be played Friday and Saturday. Quarterfinals are set for Sunday with the semi-finals being played next Monday to decide the medal match line up for August 25.
