Men's Top Seeds Post Successful Olympic Beach Volleyball Start
Athens, Greece, August 15, 2004 - Led by the Brazilian pairs of Emanuel Rego/Ricardo Santos and Benjamin Insfran/Marcio Araujo, the top three-seeded teams in the men's Beach Volleyball competition of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games posted wins here Sunday.

Top-seeded Emanuel and Ricardo had the toughest test among the top three ranked teams as the Brazilians posted a 21-15, 19-21 and 15-10 win in a 62-minute Pool A match over Norway's Iver Horrem and Bjorn Maaseide.

"Like most teams, it is always good to win the first match of any competition," said Emanuel, who is seeking to better two previous ninths in the 1996 and 2000 Beach Volleyball events in Atlanta and Sydney, respectively. "I knew it was going to be a hard match because those guys have improved themselves in the last two months on the SWATCH tour."

The second-seeded Benjamin and Marcio Araujo had an easier time with their Pool B match by besting Stephane Canet and Mathieu Hamel of France 21-13 and 21-14 in 43 minutes. The third-seeded Laciga brothers (Martin and Paul) opened Sunday competition with a 21-14 and 21-14 victory over Robert Nowotny and Peter Gartmayer of Austria in Pool C.

Sunday's most exciting match was the United States against Australia Pool A meeting where America's Dax Holdren and Stein Metzger rallied from a 22-24 first-set loss to defeat Andrew Schacht and Joshua Slack 24-22 and 15-13 in an 80-minute affair on the sand at the Olympic Beach Volleyball Centre.

A second Dieckmann brother from Germany also won a match Sunday as Christoph teamed with Andreas Scheuerpflug to score a 21-19, 19-21 and 15-10 win over Francisco Alvarez and Juan Rosell of Cuba in a 64-minute Pool B match. Christoph's twin brother Markus won his match Saturday with Jonas Reckermann over a team from Puerto Rico.

Spain's Javier Bosma and Pablo Herrera won a Pool C match over Nikki Berger and Florian Gosch of Austria 21-14 and 21-13 win in 44 minutes.
