1996 Atlanta Bronze Winners at It Again
Athens, Greece, August 21, 2004 - Just when you think it is over John Child and Mark Heese, the Canadian pair will pull another "surprise" as they did here Saturday night by eliminating seventh-seeded Mariano Baracetti and Martin Conde of Argentina from the Athens 2004 Olympic Games Beach Volleyball competition.

With a 21-17 and 21-17 win in 42 minutes over the Argentineans, Child and Heese are in position to play compete for another Olympic medal as they compete for the third time in the Summer Games with a bronze in 1996 and a fifth in 2000.

"We felt we were prepared to play well tonight," said Heese, who has been slowed this season with knee problems. "The last two years have been a struggle for us, but all the aches and pains are worth it if you can get a shot at a medal. This is what it is all about."

Before the Canadians think about playing for a medal, they must first reach the semi-finals by defeating Javier Bosma and Pablo Herrera. The Spaniards, who have won four-straight matches this week with a win over the third-seeded Laciga brothers of Switzerland, will face Child and Heese at 11 p.m. Sunday.

"Ever since I got some advice from Bjorn (Norwegian Olympian Maaseide) about how to treat my knees, I have been feeling great and ready to play, said Heese, who has been playing with Child in the 1995 season. "The Spaniards will be tough, but we are confident that our experience will help us."

The Canada-Argentina meeting was one of four first-round games for the men with teams from Australia, Germany and Switzerland joining Child and Heese in the semi-finals. The third-seeded Lacigas (Martin and Paul) scored a 21-19, 19-21 and 15-12 in 67 minutes over second-seeded Benjamin Insfran and Marcio Araujo of Brazil before a near-capacity crowd at the 10,000-seat Olympic Beach Volleyball Centre.

The Lacigas are not done with Brazilians as the Swiss brothers' play top-seeded Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos Sunday at 9 p.m. The other quarter-finals matches will have fifth-seeded Patrick Heuscher and Stefan Kobel playing Dax Holdren and Stein Metzger from the United States at 2:30 p.m, Sunday and Christoph Dieckmann and Andreas Scheuerpflug of Germany facing Julien Prosser and Mark Williams of Australia at 4:30 p.m.

Dieckmann, Markus' younger brother by four minutes, and Scheuerpflug advanced with a 21-19 and 21-12 win over Andrew Schacht and Joshua Slack of Australia Saturday afternoon while Prosser and Williams scored a 21-14 and 21-10 win over Colin Pocock and Gershon Rorich of South Africa.

The teams of Emanuel/Ricardo, Heuscher/Kobel, Holdren/Metzger and Bosma/Herrera won their first round matches Friday. The men's and women's Olympic semi-finals will be played Monday. The women's medal matches are Tuesday and the men's Wednesday.
