In addition to hosting a SWATCH
FIVB World Tour event in Prague in mid-May, the Czech Republic hosts an
FIVB Men's Challenger event in Brno for the third straight year.
The FIVB Beach Volleyball event
is staged from July 3-6, with US$30,000 up for grabs.
There will be 64 teams in
qualification competing for 24 places in the main draw.
In 2007, Michal Biza and Martin
Lebl of the Czech Republic claimed gold, with Canada's Jessi Lelliot and
Martin Reader winning silver and the Czech Republic's Premysl Kubala and
Jaroslav Pavlas taking bronze.
Brazilians Rodrigo Monteiro and
Hevaldo Moreira won gold in 2006, with Sweden's Simon Dahl and Stefan Gunnarsson taking silver and Lelliot and Reader picking up bronze.
In a 1997 event in Karlovy Vary
in the Czech Republic, Martin and Paul Laciga of Switzerland won gold,
with Norway's Vegard Hoidalen and Jorre Kjemperud claiming silver and
Italy's Andrea Ghiurghi and Ricardo Lione settling for the bronze.
Brno, the Czech Republic's
second largest city, is situated in picturesque countryside, surrounded
on three sides by wooded hills and is the opening to the Southern
Moravian lowlands to the south of the city.
Brno has historical ties to the
Austrian capital of Vienna, which is 110 km (68 miles) to the south, and
enjoys a pleasant and moderate climate.
