France's Arjona & Kadjo Post Gold Finish
Le Lavandou, France, August 29, 2004 - After missing the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, top-seeded Ethel-Julie Arjona and Virginie Kadjo of France delighted the host country crowd here Sunday by winning the US$10,000 "International de France" by defeating the Finnish twins in the finals.

Arjona and Kadjo, who fell 13 points or one FIVB SWATCH-FIVB World Tour win away from overtaking the Yanchulova sisters (Lina and Petia) of Bulgaria for the final berth in Athens, scored a 22-20 and 21-18 win in 42 minutes over the second-seeded Nystrom twins (Emilia and Erika) to split the $2,000 first-place prize. The French Beach Volleyball pair won five-straight matches in the 21-team FIVB Satellite event, including a 21-16, 18-21 and 15-9 win over sixth-seeded Carole Cordinnier and Mathlide Giordano of France, who had placed second in last week's Corsica Satellite in Porticcio, France.

The Nystroms split $1,500 for the silver medal placement as they defeated 12th-seeded Svitlana Baburina and Galyna Osheyko of the Ukraine in the semi-finals. Cordinnier and Giordano captured the bronze medal by forfeit over Baburina and Osheyko, who had to win a qualifying match along with four elimination matches to reach the "final four." Baburina and Osheyko's last elimination win was over Sarah Rohrer and Lea Schwer of Austria, who had defeated the Ukraine team in the first round of the Main Draw.
