Serbia work to break through on FIVB World Tour

Fuzhou, China, April 20, 2016 – Serbia’s Matic Milena and Milosevic Marija are working hard to break through on the FIVB World Tour as the country begins to challenge on the world stage.

Matic/Milosevic enter only their fourth FIVB World Tour event and despite a loss in their qualification match against Eiholzer Nicole and Gerson Dunja from Switzerland 2-0 (21-13, 21-18), the Serbian pair are learning from every experience.

“It was an early match, we came prepared, we woke up on time and did our routine stuff but we didn’t really play our game so that kind of explains it all. The young girls did everything well, they really didn’t make errors or room for us to break.  We’re a little disappointed with the results today but we definitely see that we can improve more. We know it, we just need a little time” said Milosevic.

Matic/Milosevic gained a better result in the Xiamen Open under wet conditions, held the previous week in China. The team made the second round of qualification in their first tournament of the season.

“In Xiamen because of the weather it was really strange for us, we don’t have those conditions in our country but we did it well, we played good. First game against China (J. L. Chen/J. M. Li) we didn’t play that good but it was enough. The second game we played really good against Austria (Schwaiger S./Hansel) who made it to the finals, we lost 2-1, but we were close,” said Matic.

Matic/Milosevic have a plan to get noticed on the FIVB World Tour.

“This is the very first year that Serbia has teams for both guys and girls that will go to most tournaments. We aim for all the FIVB Opens and also shooting for a Grand Slam because we haven’t experienced that yet. We want to break through and we know we can play a high game and we just want to get out there and get noticed,” said Milosevic.

The women are joined at the Fuzhou Open with Serbian men’s team Basta Stefan and Kolaric Lazar. Basta/Kolaric stormed through the qualification tournament, first beating Kufa David and Lenc David from the Czech Republic and then Norway’s Hordvik Oivind and Usken Bjarte.

“We did sometimes train with the guys, when my partner was sick in March, I trained with them. We spend a lot of time together, we have the same coach. It’s good, we’re very proud of them. This is their third tournament in a row they making it to the main draw so good stuff for Serbia,” said Milosevic.

Basta/Kolaric continue in Fuzhou in Pool E where they play Herrera/Gavira (ESP), Krou/Rowlandson (FRA) and Beeler/Strasser (SUI).
