USA’s Kerri Walsh (right) and April Ross hope to continue successful start to the season at the FIVB 2016 Fuzhou Open

Fuzhou, China, April 19, 2016 – USA’s Kerri Walsh and April Ross arrive in Fuzhou with confidence for the second Chinese stop on the 2016 calendar at the FIVB Fuzhou Open.

In its fourth consecutive year, the double-gender FIVB Fuzhou Open immediately follows the China’s Xiamen Open with a similar prize purse of US$150,000.

Walsh/Ross are off to an impressive start in this Olympic year, claiming gold at the Rio Grand Slam, silver in Vitoria Open and bronze just days before at the Xiamen Open. The pair have found previous success in Fuzhou earning bronze at the event last year and gold in 2014.

The USA are also strongly represented by Lauren Fendrick/Brooke Sweat and Jennifer Kessy/Emily Day each capable of challenging for medals.

Canada’s Jamie Lynn Broder and Kristina Valjas won their first ever FIVB gold medal at the 2015 Fuzhou Open and are back again to defend their title.

Isabelle Forrer and Anouk Vergé-Dépré from Switzerland enter Fuzhou right off the back of gold at the Xiamen Open and the pair just missed out on a medal at the Rio Grand Slam this year. Local hopes come in the form of China’s Chen Xue/Xinyi Xia and Fan Wang/Yuan Yue, always ones to watch when playing at home.

The women’s qualification tournament takes to the sand on April 20 with Germany’s Victoria Bieneck and Julia Großner entering in top spot. Three Chinese pairs are among the teams vying for a main draw spot; Xinxin Wang/Jingjing Ding, Lingdi Zhu/Jiaxi Wang and Jiali Chen/Jiaomei Li.

The Fuzhou Open is held at the purpose built venue in the city’s Mianjiang Riverside Park. China has hosted a total of 55 FIVB World Tour events and is the second Chinese stop on the 2016 calendar immediately following the double-gender event FIVB Xiamen Open.

The gold medal teams in each gender at the FIVB Fuzhou Open will each split $11,000, the silver $8,000, the bronze $6,000 and fourth place $4,500. The men’s medal matches will be held on Saturday and the women’s medal matches will be held on Sunday.
