Past Brazilian world champions Loiola & Fábio Luiz honoured Saturday


José Loiola (left) and Fábio Luiz Magalhaes were honoured Saturday evening at the Vitória Open for their contribution to the development of beach volleyball in Brazil.

Vitória, Brazil, March 19, 2016 - In the middle of the four-match semifinal schedule here Saturday evening at the $150,000 Vitória Open on the Camburi beach center court, the Brazilian Volleyball Federation (Confederação Brasileira de Voleibol, CBV) honoured two players that were part of FIVB World Championship teams.

In conjunction with the State of Espírito Santo Volleyball Federation, officials recognised the accomplishments of José Loiola and Fábio Luiz Magalhaes for their contribution to the development of beach volleyball in Brazil. Both players won “King of the Beach” honours during their Brazilian domestic career.

Loiola played nine seasons on the FIVB World Tour where he competed in 66 tournaments with six difference partners (1992-2003). He competed in 41 final fours with 39 podium placements and 20 gold medals as he teamed with Emanuel Rego to capture the gold medal at the 1999 FIVB World Championships in Marseille, France.

A Sydney 2000 Olympian for Brazil, Loiola teamed with Emanuel in 1999 to win a record six-straight tournaments on the FIVB World Tour highlighted by the World Championship title. The pair won 15 FIVB tournaments together in 35 starts with 26 medals. Loiola won five other international titles with Ricardo Santos, including the 2001 Goodwill Games in Brisbane, Australia. Loiola and Ricardo also placed second at the 2001 FIVB World Championships in Klagenfurt, Austria.

Fábio Luiz played eight full seasons on the FIVB World Tour (2002-2014) and was a 2005 FIVB world champion with Marcio Araujo. The pair netted the silver medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games where Fábio Luiz and Marcio Araujo defeated Emanuel and Ricardo in a historic semifinal match at the Chinese Summer Games.

The FIVB World Tour’s best blocker and most improved player in 2005, Fábio Luiz competed in 98 international events with seven difference partners. Winner of 11 gold medals with Marcio Araujo, Fábio Luiz's international career also featured 30 podium placements and 35 final four appearances.
