World Tour Countdown -1: World Tour Finals in Fort Lauderdale
Lausanne, Switzerland, February 14, 2016 - There is one day to go before the start of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Kish Island Open. In our countdown to the re-start of the World Tour, we look back at the inaugural World Tour Finals in Fort Lauderdale in the United States.
The inaugural double-gender Swatch FIVB World Tour Finals were the climax of the 2015 beach volleyball calendar. The sport discipline’s newest event featured the top eight point leaders and two wild cards in each gender, where an all-Brazilian cast topped the podium. Alison Cerutti and Bruno Oscar Schmidt were crowned men’s champions, while Larissa Franca and Talita Antunes took the women’s title.
The World Tour Finals were also an opportunity to unveil the FIVB’s 9 Goals, a blueprint for the FIVB to achieve its vision. The event also set the standard for future international beach volleyball events, as the spectator experience was brought to a whole new level through technology and entertainment. The Challenge System was also used for the first time following tests at the Rio de Janeiro Open.
The Swatch FIVB World Tour Finals were a culmination of a colourful beach volleyball season and a demonstration of the philosophy of the sport, which involves top-level competition, innovation and world-class entertainment.
