Always a star!

Issaquah, Washington, USA, August 8, 2015 - Once a star, always a star.
That's Misty May-Treanor as the three-time Olympic and world champion returned to beach volleyball competition here this weekend by winning three-straight matches on the Lake Sammamish State Park courts with former college teammate Brittany Hochevar to advance to the women's semi-finals at the US$150,000 AVP Seattle Open.
It has been almost three years since May-Treanor played in her last competitive event when she teamed with Kerri Walsh Jennings to win the gold medal at the London 2012 Olympic Games.  And during this break in competition, May-Treanor gave birth to her daughter (Malia Barbara, June 3, 2014).
After winning her gold medal in London with Walsh Jennings, May-Treanor was quoted as saying "this is my last match.  Beach volleyball's not going to be my career anymore. It's time for me to be a wife. I want to be a mom and share time with my family. All of us as athletes sacrifice more on the family end than people realize. And it's getting back to that. My mind says it's time. My body says it's time. And it's the right time."
But May-Treanor returned to the sand due to an invitation from Hochevar, who was seeking a partner when current teammate Jennifer Fopma was asked to play with April Ross three weeks ago for a domestic event in New York and a FIVB World Tour stop in Yokohama, Japan.
Ross was in need of a partner when regular teammate Walsh Jennings dislocated her right shoulder last month at a FIVB World Tour stop in Switzerland.  With Walsh Jennings sidelined, Fopma started playing with Ross and Hochevar was left following the action in New York and Japan.

After not being able to play with Hochevar at the AVP New York stop due to a clinic conflict, May-Treanor told her college teammate that she would play if needed for Seattle.  "She (Hochevar) has been kind of left out of the mix," May-Treanor was quoted in an Associated Press article about the partner shuffling. "It stinks when you're kind of in that spot,  It's tough being that player that's out. She's so pumped for this sport."
For Hochevar, it is like playing with a coach as a partner.  “Misty, every single play is making adjustments on me and it’s really fun to get real-time results,” said Hochevar to a Seattle Times reporter covering the event Saturday.  “I feel very fortunate. I hope my game gets to a point when I rejoin with (normal partner) Jen Fopma, I can take the things I’ve learned and immediately apply that to an Olympic push.”
With Walsh Jennings expected to return to action for the next FIVB World Tour event in Long Beach August 17-23), Hochevar and Fopma are entered in the United States Grand Slam event and received a Main Draw "wild card" for the 11th qualifying event for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
Seeded 11th in the 16-team women's Main Draw, May-Treanor and Hochevar posted their third win in the Seattle Open by defeating second-seeded Emily Day and Jen Kessy 2-0 (21-17, 21-17) in a 42-minute quarter-final match.  May-Treanor and Hochever play third-seeded Lane Carico and Summer Ross Sunday morning in the second semi-final match.
It will be the second-time to the two teams have met this weekend as May-Treanor and Hochevar posted a 2-1 (15-21, 23-21, 15-10) second-round win Friday in 53 minutes.  In the first "final four" match Sunday, the top-seeded Fopma and Ross play fourth-seeded Kim DiCello and Kendra Van Zwieten with semi-final winners playing later in the day for the Seattle Open title.
“It’s a sigh of relief,” May-Treanor was quoted in the Seattle Times after winning the quarter-final match over Day and Kessy, who teamed with Ross to win the Olympic silver medal in London.  “To be able to come out here and do what we’ve been doing is a great accomplishment. Everything from here on out is icing on the cake.”
According to the Seattle Times article, the quarter-final win for Hochevar served as another "coachable" moment from May-Treanor.  After jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the second set, Hochever and May-Treanor had to withstand a rally from Day and Kessy to win match.
“That’s what makes a difference between the really solid teams and the others; you shut the door,” said May-Treanor to the Seattle Times reporter.  “When we (Hochevar) built that lead, we went to neutral for a couple points and you can’t do that. So, I said it’s a matter of being aggressive and not doubting yourself.”
The Seattle Times report also noted 'Hochevar agreed that confidence is the best lesson May-Treanor is teaching her this weekend. But the Olympian added the tournament is rebuilding her confidence, too. She’s only practiced twice with Hochevar, never competing on the same team.'
The Seattle Open is May-Treanor 94th domestic team event in her career since first playing in 1999.  Sunday's semi-final is her 90th appearance in a domestic "final four" with 68 titles, 14 seconds and seven thirds.  On the FIVB World Tour, May-Treanor competed in 99 events with 43 gold medals, 69 podium placements and 75 "final four" finishes.  May-Treanor and Walsh won 40 gold medals together in 77 international starts.
