Lausanne, Switzerland, October 18, 2013 – With nine Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) Beach Volleyball World Tour Grand Slams, the 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships and two FIVB Opens completed, the 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour of Grand Slams takes one week off before heading to China from October 22 to 27 for the double-gender $440,000 FIVB Xiamen Grand Slam.
Following last week’s $440,000 FIVB São Paulo Grand Slam, two teams from beach volleyball superpower Brazil remain at the top of the 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour/Open leader board heading into the final Grand Slam and last three FIVB Open events of the season.
The ninth double-gender Grand Slam of the 2013 FIVB World Tour was held this past week in São Paulo, Brazil as the FIVB World Tour returned to the South American country for the 27th consecutive year. For the men, it was Brazil’s Pedro Salgado/Bruno Schmidt winning their second gold medal on the 2013 FIVB World Tour in their first season as a team by defeating USA’s Phil Dalhausser/Casey Jennings. Jennings was a pinch-hitter for Sean Rosenthal, Dalhausser’s teammate this season, who withdrew the Saturday before the tournament with a back injury.
On the women’s side, the newest team of the United States, USA’s April Ross/Kerri Walsh Jennings winning the gold medal over Germany’s Laura Ludwig/Kira Walkenhorst. For Ross, it was her 11th career gold medal and 45th for Walsh Jennings, leaving her one gold shy of the FIVB record held by both Brazil’s Larissa Franca/Juliana Felisberta for the all-time lead. This was the second consecutive silver medal for the German duo.
After the FIVB São Paulo Grand Slam, the 2013 FIVB World Tour Grand Slams will finish its season October in Xiamen, China (October 22 to 27). While the FIVB World Tour will be done, there will be one double-gender FIVB Open event in Durban, South Africa (December 11 to 15)as well as a women’s only FIVB Open event in Phuket, Thailand (October 29 to November 3).
Continuing to ride high atop the men’s FIVB World Tour/Open season point standings is Brazil’s new team of Pedro Salgado/Bruno Schmidt while continuing to lead the women’s FIVB World Tour/Open competition is another new Brazilian team, Taiana Lima/Talita Antunes.
Counting the FIVB São Paulo Grand Slam, Brazil’s Salgado/Schmidt have collected 6,340 points on the 2013 FIVB World Tour/FIVB Opens and their lead over Latvia’s second-place Aleksandrs Samoilovs/Janis Smedins to 200 points and is 1,010 over Brazil’s third place Ricardo Santos/Alvaro Filho with USA’s Jake Gibb/Casey Patterson in fourth place, 1,210 points behind the leading team. In the season earnings race, Brazil’s Salgado/Schmidt has retaken the lead with their São Paulo win with $177,275. Latvia’s Samoilovs/J. Smedins is in second place with $169,700 followed by Brazil’s Ricardo/Filho with $148,400. All three of the top teams are playing in their first full season together while Ricardo did not play one tournament because of an injury.
In 2013 the FIVB women’s international competition, Brazil’s Lima/Antunes duo has been superlative and continues to lead the 2013 FIVB World Tour/FIVB Opens with 6,490 points and $207,000 in earnings. Brazilian sisters Maria Clara Salgado/Carolina Salgado are second with 5,700 points and $143,500 in earnings. Germany’s Katrin Holtwick/Ilka Semmler is third in points with 5,360 and fifth in money with $112,700. Fourth in points (5,340) and third in earnings ($119,875) is Brazil’s Barbara Seixas/Liliane Maestrini.
Fourth in earnings is China’s veteran duo of Chen Xue/Xi Zhang with $114,000. Fifth in points and sixth in prize money is Brazil’s Agatha Bednarczuk/Maria Antonelli, who earned the bronze medal in São Paulo, with 5,260 points and $109,875 in earnings.Statistically in the FIVB men’s international competition, Brazil’s Salgado/Schmidt duo has a 52-15 match record so far for a 77.6% winning percentage, currently the third highest on the FIVB World Tour. Based on winning percentage to date for FIVB World Tour and FIVB Open events, USA’s Sean Rosenthal/Phil Dalhausser duo remain first at 81.8% (36-8), followed by Latvia’s Samoilovs/J. Smedins at 81.0% (51-12), and Brazil’s Salgado/Schmidt. At number four is USA’s Jake Gibb/Casey Patterson tandem at 72.7% (40-15), followed Italy’s Paolo Nicolai/Daniele Lupo in fifth at 71.9% (41-16) followed by Spain’s Pablo Herrera/Adrian Gavira at 68.6% (35-16) in sixth.
In this year’s women’s FIVB World Tour/FIVB Open play, Brazil’s Lima/Antunes duo has the second highest winning percentage at 85.9% (55-9) as China’s Xue/Zhang have played in four of 11 events this year and have an amazing 92.6% (25-2) to lead. Third is Germany’s Holtwick/Semmler at 75.4% (46-15), followed by Brazil’s Bednarczk/Antonelli at 74.2% (46-16), Brazil’s Salgado sisters at 73.8% (48-17) and Brazil’s Seixas/Maestrini at 72.6% (45-17).
Dalhausser/Rosenthal have won three gold medals (Fuzhou, Rome, Long Beach) on the FIVB men’s FIVB World Tour/FIVB Open scorecard, while Latvia’s Smedins/Samoilovs (Corrientes, Moscow) and Brazil’s Salgado/Schmidt (The Hague, São Paulo) have two gold medals each. USA’s Gibb/Patterson (Shanghai), Netherlands’ Alexander Brouwer/Robert Meeuwsen (Stare Jablonki), Brazil’s Santos/Filho (Gstaad), Russia’s Yaroslav Koshkarev/Konstantin Semenov (Anapa) and Brazil’s Vitor Felipe/Evandro Goncalves (Berlin) each have one gold medal.
On the FIVB women’s international season scorecard, Brazil’s Antunes/Lima (Shanghai, The Hague, Rome, Long Beach, Berlin) have a remarkable five gold medals while China’s Xue/Zhang team has won three gold medals in four tournaments this year (Fuzhou, Stare Jablonki and Gstaad) and Brazil’s Salgado sisters (Moscow), Netherlands’ van Gestel/Meppelink (Corrientes), Russia’s Ekaterina Khomyakova/Evgeniya Ukolova (Anapa) along with USA’s Ross/Walsh Jennings (São Paulo) each has one gold medal.
The 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour comprises 10 Grand Slam events and the 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships. Not part of the World Tour but counting towards FIVB points/earnings are four Open events (three double-gender tournaments and one women-only).
Meanwhile the FIVB has also released an updated beach volleyball season ranking for the men and women, which takes into account the World Tour, Open events and points from the continental and national tours. In the men’s ranking Latvia’s Smedins/Samoilovs are at the top of the table with 6,590 points, while their Brazilian counterparts Salgado/Schmidt follow with 6,340 points. In the women’s rankings, Brazil’s Lima/Talita are currently at the head of the leader board with 6,490 points with Germany’s Semmler-Holtwick coming in second with 5,914 points.
