After eight of 10 Grand Slams, Brazil still tops FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour

Brazil’s Lima/Antunes are currently top of the leader board and continue to lead the 2013 FIVB World Tour/FIVB Opens with 6,090 points and $201,500 in earnings.

Lausanne, Switzerland, August 29, 2013 – With eight Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) Beach Volleyball World Tour Grand Slams, the 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships and two FIVB Opens completed, the 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour of Grand Slams takes off five weeks before heading to China from October 2 to 6 for the double-gender $440,000 FIVB Beijing Grand Slam.

Following last week’s $440,000 FIVB Moscow Grand Slam, two teams from beach volleyball superpower Brazil remain at the top of the 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour/Open leader board heading into the final two Grand Slams and final four FIVB Open events of the season.

The eighth double-gender Grand Slam of the 2013 FIVB World Tour was held this past week in Moscow, Russia. For the men, it was Latvia’s Aleksandrs Samoilovs/Janis Smedins winning their second gold medal on the 2013 FIVB World Tour in their first season as a team by defeating Brazil’s Evandro Goncalves/Emanuel Rego, who were playing in their first FIVB World Tour event together. It was the third career gold medal of Janis Smedins who won one with Martins Plavins last season.

On the women’s side, Brazil’s Salgado sisters, Carolina and Maria Clara each won their second career FIVB World Tour title by defeating Germany’s Laura Ludwig/Kira Walkenhorst. It was the Salgado sisters’ first gold medal since September 2008 when they won in Myslowice, Poland.

After the FIVB Moscow Grand Slam, the 2013 FIVB World Tour Grand Slams has five weeks off before finishing the season in back-to-back weeks in October in China (Beijing, October 2 to 6) and Brazil (São Paulo, Oct. 9 to 13). While the FIVB World Tour is off, there will be two double-gender FIVB Open events in September with one in India (Vizag, September 4 to 8) and one in Africa (Kampala, Uganda, September 25 to 29).

Continuing to ride high atop the men’s FIVB World Tour/Open season point standings is Brazil’s new team of Pedro Salgado/Bruno Schmidt while continuing to lead the women’s FIVB World Tour/Open competition is another new Brazilian team, Taiana Lima/Talita Antunes.

Counting the FIVB Moscow Grand Slam, Brazil’s Salgado/Schmidt have collected 5,540 points on the 2013 FIVB World Tour/FIVB Opens and their lead over Latvia’s second-place Aleksandrs Samoilovs/Janis Smedins has shrunk to just 40 points and is 530 over Brazil’s third place Ricardo Santos/Alvaro Filho with USA’s Jake Gibb/Casey Patterson in fourth place, 890 points behind the leading team. In the season earnings race, Latvia’s Samoilovs/J. Smedins have jumped for third to first with $153,200 followed by Brazil’s Ricardo/Filho with $144,700 and Brazil’s Salgado/Schmidt with $144,275. All three of the top teams are playing in their first full season together and Ricardo didn’t play one tournament because of an injury.

In 2013 FIVB women’s international competition, Brazil’s Lima/Antunes duo has been superlative and continues to lead the 2013 FIVB World Tour/FIVB Opens with 6,090 points and $201,500 in earnings. Jumping up from fourth in each category to second with their Moscow gold is Brazil’s Salgado sisters with 5,220 points and $133,500 in earnings. Third in both areas is Brazil’s Barbara Seixas/Liliane Maestrini with 4,940 and $114,375.

Fourth in points and fifth in earnings is Germany’s Katrin Holtwick/Ilka Semmler with 4,880 and $102,700 while fourth in earnings is China’s veteran duo of Chen Xue/Xi Zhang with $114,000. Fifth in points and sixth in prize money is Brazil’s Agatha Bednarczuk/Maria Antonelli with 4,620 points and $93,375 in earnings.

Statistically in FIVB men’s international competition, Brazil’s Salgado/Schmidt duo has a 45-15 match record so far for a 75.0% winning percentage, third highest on the FIVB World Tour. Based on winning percentage to date for FIVB World Tour and FIVB Open events, USA’s Sean Rosenthal/Phil Dalhausser duo remain first at 81.8% (36-8), followed by Latvia’s Samoilovs/J. Smedins at 80.4% (45-11), and Brazil’s Salgado/Schmidt. At number four is Italy’s Paolo Nicolai/Daniele Lupo at 73.1% (38-14) followed by Spain’s Pablo Herrera/Adrian Gavira at 72.1% (31-12) and USA’s Jake Gibb/Casey Patterson tandem is sixth at 72.0% (36-14).

In this year’s women’s FIVB World Tour/FIVB Open play, Brazil’s Lima/Antunes duo has the second highest winning percentage at 86.7% (52-8) as China’s Xue/Zhang have played in four of 10 events this year and have an amazing 92.6% (25-2) to lead. Third is Brazil’s Seixas/Maestrini at 75.4% (43-14), followed by Germany’s Holtwick/Semmler at 75.0% (42-14), Brazil’s Salgado sisters at 74.6% (44-15), Brazil’s Bednarczk/Antonelli at 74.1% (40-14) and USA’s April Ross/Jennifer Kessy at 72.2% (26-10) to complete the top seven.

With Dalhausser/Rosenthal (Fuzhou, Rome, Long Beach) having won three gold medals on the FIVB men’s FIVB World Tour/FIVB Open scorecard, Latvia’s Smedins/Samoilovs two gold medals (Corrientes, Moscow), while USA’s Gibb/Patterson (Shanghai), Brazil’s Salgado/Schmidt (The Hague), Netherlands’ Alexander Brouwer/Robert Meeuwsen (Stare Jablonki), Brazil’s Santos/Filho (Gstaad), Russia’s Yaroslav Koshkarev/Konstantin Semenov (Anapa) and Brazil’s Vitor Felipe/Evandro Goncalves (Berlin) each have one gold medal.

On the FIVB women’s international season scorecard, Brazil’s Antunes/Lima (Shanghai, The Hague, Rome, Long Beach, Berlin) have a remarkable five gold medals while China’s Xue/Zhang team has won three gold medals this year (Fuzhou, Stare Jablonki and Gstaad) and Netherlands’ van Gestel/Meppelink (Corrientes). Russia’s Ekaterina Khomyakova/Evgeniya Ukolova (Anapa) along with Brazil’s Salgado sisters (Moscow) each has one gold medal.

The 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour comprise 10 Grand Slam events and the 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships. Not part of the World Tour but counting towards FIVB points/earnings are seven Open events (five double-gender tournaments and two women-only).

The 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Grand Slam schedule will end in Brazil with the $440,000 FIVB São Paulo Grand Slam to be held from October 9 to 13.
