Brazil leads FIVB World Tour after seven Grand Slams

Brazil’s Lima/Antunes have been nothing short of amazing having won a remarkable five gold medals on this year's World Tour

Lausanne, Switzerland, August 13, 2013 – With seven FIVB World Tour Grand Slams, the 2013 Beach Volleyball World Championships and two FIVB Opens completed, the 2013 FIVB World Tour takes some time off before heading to Russia next week for the double-gender $440,000 FIVB Moscow Grand Slam.

Following last week’s $440,000 FIVB Berlin smart Grand Slam, it is the Brazilian teams who remain at the top of the 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour/Open leader board heading into the final three Grand Slams of the season.

The seventh double-gender Grand Slam of the 2013 FIVB World Tour was held this past week in Berlin, Germany. For the men, no seed higher than 12th made the final four, breaking an all-time men’s FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour record set in Stavanger back in 2007 when the seventh-seed was the highest in the semifinals. Ultimately it was Brazil’s 13th-seeded qualifiers Vitor Felipe/Evandro Gonçalves each winning their first FIVB World Tour gold medal, who defeated the 25th-seeded Russian duo of Viacheslav Krasilnikov and Konstantin Semenov

On the women’s side, Taiana Lima/Talita Antunes made it a gold medal sweep for Brazil, defeating Katrin Holtwick and Ilka Semmler of Germany, 2-1 (16-21, 23-21, 15-12) in 51 minutes. Lima and Antunes won their season-leading fifth title of 2013 – the fifth FIVB World Tour win of Lima’s career and the 18th for Antunes. Despite losing the gold-medal match, Holtwick and Semmler won their first ever medal for a German women’s team as the host nation. All three previous German teams reaching final fours in Berlin finished fourth, including Holtwick and Semmler last season. The 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour resumes with the FIVB Moscow Grand Slam from August 21 to 25.

After the FIVB Moscow Grand Slam, the 2013 FIVB World Tour takes six weeks off before finishing the season in back-to-back weeks in October in China and Brazil. While the World Tour is off, there are still two double-gender FIVB Open events to take place with one in India and one in Africa.

Continuing to ride atop the men’s FIVB World Tour/Open season point standings is Brazil’s new team of Pedro Salgado/Bruno Schmidt, while leading the women’s FIVB World Tour/Open competition is another new Brazilian team, Lima/Antunes.

Counting the FIVB Berlin smart Grand Slam, Brazil’s Salgado-Schmidt have collected 5,140 points on the 2013 FIVB World Tour/FIVB Opens and the lead on the score board while Latvia’s second-place Aleksandrs Samoilovs/Janis Smedins have 440 points and USA’s Jake Gibb/Casey Patterson 490. In the season earnings race, Brazil’s Salgado/Schmidt continue to lead with $138,775 followed by Brazil’s Ricardo Santos/Alvaro Filho with $128,200 and Latvia’s Samoilovs/J. Smedins with $120,200. All three of the top teams are playing in their first full season together.

In the 2013 FIVB women’s international competition, Brazil’s Lima/Antunes have been nothing short of amazing and continue to lead the 2013 FIVB World Tour/FIVB Opens with 5,690 points and $196,000 in earnings. Second in points is Brazil’s Barbara Seixas/Liliane Maestrini with 4,540 and second in earnings is China’s veteran duo of Xue/Zhang with $114,000. Third in points is Germany’s Katrin Holtwick/Ilka Semmler with 4,480 while fourth are Brazil’s sister duo Maria Clara Salgado/Carolina Salgado with 4,420 and fifth is Brazil’s Agatha Bednarczuk/Maria Antonelli with 4,140 points and sixth is Spain’s Liliana Fernandez/Elsa Baquerizo with 3,670 points.

Third among the women’s money leaders is Brazil’s Seixas/Maestrini with $108,875 while Brazil’s Salgado sisters are fourth in money with $100,500, while fifth is Germany’s Holtwick/Semmler with $97,200 and sixth is Brazil’s Bednarczuk/Antonelli with $83,375.

Statistically in the FIVB men’s international competition, Brazil’s Salgado/Schmidt duo has a 42-13 match record so far for a 76.4% winning percentage, the third highest on the FIVB World Tour. Based on a winning percentage to date for the FIVB World Tour and FIVB Open events, USA’s Sean Rosenthal/Phil Dalhausser duo remain first at 81.8% (36-8), followed by Latvia’s Samoilovs/J. Smedins at 79.6% (39-10), and Brazil’s Salgado/Schmidt. At four is Italy’s Paolo Nicolai/Daniele Lupo at 72.9% (35-13) followed by USA’s Jake Gibb/Casey Patterson tandem in fifth at 72.0% (36-14), and Spain’s Pablo Herrera/Adrian Gavira in sixth place at 71.8% (28-11).

In this year’s women’s FIVB World Tour/FIVB Open play, Brazil’s Lima/Antunes duo has the second highest winning percentage at 87.5% (49-7) as China’s Xue/Zhang have played in four of nine events this year and have an amazing 92.6% (25-2) to lead. Third is Brazil’s Seixas/Maestrini at 75.5% (40-13), followed by Germany’s Holtwick/Semmler at 75.0% (39-13), Brazil’s Salgado sisters at 74.5% (38-13), Brazil’s Bednarczk/Antonelli at 72.9% (35-13), USA’s April Ross/Jennifer Kessy at 72.2% (26-10) and the Netherlands’ Madelein Meppelink/Sophie van Gestel at 70.0% (28-12) to complete the top eight.

With Dalhausser/Rosenthal (Fuzhou, Rome, Long Beach) having won three gold medals on the FIVB men’s FIVB World Tour/FIVB Open scorecard, the following duos each have one gold medal: USA’s Gibb/Patterson (Shanghai), Latvia’s Smedins/Samoilovs (Corrientes), Brazil’s Salgado/Schmidt (The Hague), the Netherlands’ Brouwer/Meeuwsen (Stare Jablonki), Brazil’s Santos/Filho (Gstaad), Russia’s Yaroslav Koshkarev/Konstantin Semenov (Anapa) and Brazil’s Vitor Felipe/Evandro Goncalves (Berlin).

On the FIVB women’s international season scorecard, Brazil’s Antunes/Lima (Shanghai, The Hague, Rome, Long Beach, Berlin) have a remarkable five gold medals while China’s Xue/Zhang team has won three gold medals this year (Fuzhou, Stare Jablonki and Gstaad) and the Netherlands’ van Gestel/Meppelink (Corrientes) along with Russia’s Ekaterina Khomyakova/Evgeniya Ukolova (Anapa) each has one gold medal.

The 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour comprises 10 Grand Slam events and the 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships. Not part of the World Tour but counting towards FIVB points/earnings are seven Open events (five double-gender tournaments and two women-only).

The 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour will end in Brazil with the $440,000 FIVB São Paulo Grand Slam to be held from October 9 to 13.
