World Tour heads to Germany after US stop

It was a crowded arena for the men's gold medal match in Long Beach

Lausanne, Switzerland, July 31, 2013Enjoying the first FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour event back in the United States in a decade at the highly-successful Southern California’s $440,000 FIVB Long Beach Grand Slam, the tour takes a week off before returning to Germany next week for the double-gender $440,000 FIVB Berlin Grand Slam. The event in Germany will be the seventh of 10 grand slams on the 2013 FIVB World Tour.

With a busy week completed with a Grand Slam in the United States and an Open event in Anapa (Russia), Brazil continues to pace the men and women’s FIVB Beach Volleyball standings. Continuing to ride atop the men’s season point standings is Brazil’s new team of Pedro Salgado/Bruno Schmidt while leading the women’s competition is another new Brazilian team, Taiana Lima/Talita Antunes.

While Brazil is at the top of the FIVB World Tour after seven of 10 events in the 2013 season, USA’s Sean Rosenthal/Phil Dalhausser won the men’s gold medal and Taiana Lima/Talita Antunes won the women’s gold medal at last week’s FIVB Long Beach Grand Slam, the FIVB World Tour’s first visit to the United States since 2003.

The sixth double-gender Grand Slam of the 2013 FIVB World Tour was held this past week in Long Beach, United States. For the men, the USA took the gold medal with Phil Dalhausser/Sean Rosenthal defeating Spain’s Adrian Gavira/Pablo Herrera (21-15, 21-18) in 45 minutes. It was the pair’s third FIVB World Tour/Open victory of the season, the 26th career win for Dalhausser and the seventh for Rosenthal.

On the women’s side in Long Beach, in an all-Brazilian final, Taiana Lima/Talita Antunes claimed their fourth FIVB World Tour/Open gold medal of 2013 with a win over sisters Maria Clara and Carolina Salgado (20-22, 21-15, 15-13) in 61 minutes. It was Lima’s fourth career victory and the 17th for Antunes.

Also on the FIVB international schedule this past week was an Open event in Anapa, Russia where the host country swept both gold medals in finals over Germany. For the women, Russia’s Ekaterina Khomyakova/Evgeniya Ukolova Ukolova defeated Germany’s Teresa Mersmann/Isabel Schneider (21-10, 21-14) in 31 minutes and in a three-set battle, Russia’s Yaroslav Koshkarev/Konstantin Semenov won the men’s gold over Germany’s Lars Flüggen/Alexander Walkenhorst (25-23, 24-26, 15-13) in 59 minutes.

The 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour takes this week off before moving back to Europe for the US$440,000 Berlin Grand Slam from August 6 to 11 and the US$440,000 Moscow Grand Slam from August 21-25. It was the second FIVB gold medal for Russia’s Khomyakova/Ukolova and first for Koshkarev/Semenov.

After returning to the USA for the first time in a decade for an FIVB World Tour event, Brazil’s Salgado/Schmidt have collected 4,740 points and the lead while Latvia’s second-place Aleksandrs Samoilovs/Janis Smedins take 440 points and USA’s Jake Gibb/Casey Patterson 490 points.
