Double or nothing for Bruno

The 27-year-old explained that he and Alison are taking the 2014 Transavia Grand Slam match by match but are confident of taking home gold

By Marinthe Bos

Amsterdam, the Netherlands, July 16, 2014 – The 2013 The Hague Grand Slam was a watershed moment for Bruno Schmidt. The Brazilian picked up his first FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour gold medal with Pedro Salgado before going on to clinch the Sao Paolo Grand Slam on home sand later in the year. However, he is hoping to add to his own personal gold medal tally with new partner Alison Cerutti during this year’s Transavia Grand Slam.

The 27-year-old believes the pair have a great chance to clinch the crown in the Netherlands, and have gained momentum in recent weeks after taking home the silver medal in Gstaad.

“We started this season in ninth place [in the World Ranking] and now we are moving up to third. That means we are going into the right direction.”

However Bruno, who also won the 2006 FIVB Beach Volleyball Junior World Championship, isn’t resting on his laurels, insisting that the pair are taking one step at a time.

Indeed Bruno has had several playing partners since he debuted on the World Tour in 2007. His first podium came in 2010 with Benjamin where the duo finished third in front of their home fans in Brasilia. However he is searching for more success with his newest match.

“The best we can do is think match by match and keep the power and the level high,” he explained. “The first match [against Daan Spijkers and Michiel van Dorsten] went very well. My partner Alison did a very good job. I’m very happy and hope to continue playing like this.”

And Bruno’s past success in the Netherlands means he holds a special place for this leg of the World Tour especially looking forward to next year’s FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships.

“I love The Hague and Amsterdam. The atmosphere is amazing. I love the idea of three venues. Sometimes it gets boring to do the same thing at the same place all the time. But with the different venues it gets a lot more interesting.”
