Brazil and Czech Republic in women’s final in Berlin, USA and Brazil supply men’s semifinalists

Berlin, Germany, June 21, 2014 – Brazil’s Maria Antonelli and Juliana Felisberta and Kristyna Kolocova and Marketa Slukova from the Czech Republic reached the final of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Berlin smart Grand Slam on Saturday.

 

Brazil also advanced two teams into the men’s semifinals, which are played on Sunday morning. Emanuel Rego and Pedro Solberg Salgado will face USA’s John Hyden and Tri Bourne, while Bruno Oscar Schmidt and Alison meet another American team: Ryan Doherty and Nick Lucena.

 

The men’s semifinals are scheduled for 11.00 and 12.00, followed by the women’s bronze medal match (14.00) between China’s Fan Wang/Yue and Germany’s Borger/Büthe and the men’s bronze (15.00). The women’s final starts at 16.20 and the men’s gold medal match at 17.20.

Maria Antonelli and Juliana Felisberta upset the home crowd at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Berlin smart Grand Slam by defeating Germany’s Karla Borger and Britta Büthe 2-0 (21-15, 21-17) in the semifinal on Saturday.

The Brazilians will play Czech team Kristyna Kolocova and Marketa Slukova in the final on Sunday. Read more

 

American qualifiers Doherty and Lucena storm into Berlin semis

 

USA’s Ryan Doherty and Nick Lucena reached the final four of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Berlin smart Grand Slam, in only their third event together and coming all the way from qualification.

The Americans defeated 5th seeded Pablo Herrera and Adrian Gavira of Spain 2-1 (21-18, 17-21, 15-11) and then booked a 2-0 (27-25, 21-19) over Dutch team Jon Stiekema and Christiaan Varenhorst in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Read more

 

Antonelli/Juliana knock out Ross/Walsh to advance to semifinal

 

Maria Antonelli and Juliana Felisberta upset USA’s April Ross and Kerri Walsh with a 2-1 (18-21, 21-14, 15-12) win in the quarterfinals at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Berlin smart Grand Slam on Saturday.

The Brazilian qualifiers now face home team Karla Borger and Britta Büthe in the semifinal at 16.00 this afternoon. Read more

 

Germany has hosted a total of 22 FIVB World Tour events (14 men, 8 women all in Berlin) before, with Brazil leading the medal count in both genders.

 

In 14 men’s tournaments, Brazil has 17, followed by Germany and Switzerland with four each, Argentina, Norway, Spain and the United States with three each, Australia with two and with one each men’s medals are Canada, Poland and Russia.

 

In eight FIVB World Tour women’s events held in Berlin, Brazil leads the medal parade with eight medals followed by the USA with seven, China with four and with one each women’s medals are Australia, Cuba, Germany, Italy and Japan.

 

The gold medal teams in the FIVB Berlin smart Grand slam will each split $57,000, the silver $43,000, the bronze $32,000 and fourth place $24,000.
