Women reach deciding phase in Berlin, men just get started

Berlin, Germany, June 19, 2014 – While the women’s tournament reached the deciding knockout phase at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Berlin smart Grand Slam, the men finished the first two rounds of pool play on Thursday.

 

In the men’s tournament there were some upsets, Moscow champions Semenov/Krasilnikov lost both of their matches and world champions Brouwer/Meeuwsen lost one.

 

The women’s top teams stayed on track. Last year’s winners Talita/Taiana, Moscow champions April Ross and Kerri Walsh and European champions Meppelink/Van Iersel all topped the pool with three straight wins.

 

American qualifiers upset Moscow champions in Berlin

 

John Hyden and Tri Bourne got off to a good start on the first day of main draw of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Berlin smart Grand Slam.

The American qualifiers upset the freshly crowned Moscow champions, Konstantin Semenov and Viacheslav Krasilnikov 2-0 (21-18, 21-13) on Thursday at the lovely Beach Mitte courts. Read more

 

Impressive start for Doherty and Lucena in Berlin main draw

 

After qualifying on Wednesday for the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Berlin smart Grand Slam, Ryan Doherty and Nick Lucena showed off some great play in main draw on Thursday.

The 24th seeded Americans upset world champions Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen (21-16, 21-16) in the morning and defeated Berlin’s reigning champions Vitor Felipe and Evandro Goncalves (15-21, 21-14, 15-13) in their second pool match. Read more

 

Germany’s Borger/Büthe delight the home crowd with third win

 

While two other German teams finished last in their pool at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Berlin smart Grand Slam, Karla Borger and Britta Büthe kept the hopes up for the home fans.

The vice-world champions defeated Italy’s Marta Menegatti and Viktoria Orsi Toth 2-0 (21-17, 21-12) on Thursday and topped the pool with three wins. Read more

 

USA’s Ross/Walsh on track for back-to-back gold

 

April Ross and Kerri Walsh seem right on track for another gold medal after they won the Moscow Grand Slam last week. The American top team on Thursday won their final round robin match against Australia’s Louise Bawden and Taliqua Clancy (21-15, 21-15) to top the pool.

With a forfeit from fellow Americans Pavlik/Fopma in their first pool match and a 2-0 (21-12, 25-23) win over Polish team Brzostek/Kolosinka on Wednesday, Ross and Walsh advance to the second knockout round unbeaten. Read more

 

The Berlin smart Grand Slam continues on Friday with the final pool round and first knockout round for the men and the first and second elimination rounds for the women.

 

Berlin is hosting a FIVB World Tour women’s event for the 9th time and a men’s event for the 15th time. After the $800.000 Berlin smart Grand Slam the FIVB World Tour continues its seven-event swing through Europe.

 

There are three more double-gender FIVB Grand Slams on the European continent: the FIVB Stavanger Grand Slam in Norway (June 24-28), the FIVB Gstaad Grand Slam in Switzerland (July 8-13) and finally the FIVB Transavia Grand Slam, played in three different cities in the Netherlands (July 15-20), but based in The Hague.
