Czech Republic, Austria and two German teams in Prague Open final four

The Czech fans in the Stvanice stadium came in large numbers to cheer for home team Kolocova/Slukova

Prague, Czech Republic, May 24, 2014 – The final four of the inaugural women’s FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Prague Open features a team from the Czech Republic, one from Austria and two German pairs.

The first semifinal at 10.00 on Sunday will be all-German with Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst and Katrin Holtwick and Ilka Semmler. At 11.00 home team Kristyna Kolocova and Marketa Slukova take on Doris and Stefanie Schwaiger from Austria.

The bronze medal match and the final are scheduled for 14.00 and 15.00. All the matches in the 8,000 seat Stvanice Stadium on Sunday will be televised.

The last but one day of the Prague Open came with a few surprises, like the elimination of China’s Chen Xue/Xinyi Xia and Brazil’s Maria Antonelli/Juliana Felisberta. But most of all the home crowd was delighted with the success of the top seeded Czech team.

After several months of absence Austria’s Doris and Stefanie Schwaiger made their comeback on the FIVB World Tour this week in Prague.

Doris, with 29 years the oldest Schwaiger-sister, sustained a groin injury at the Sao Paulo Grand Slam in October last year. It took her seven months to recover. More

The FIVB Prague Open is the third Open on the 2014 calendar. It is also the 264th FIVB women’s tournament since FIVB began women’s competitions in 1992.

In 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2012 the Czech capital also hosted a World Tour event, but these were all men’s Opens.

The venue, Stvanice Island in the middle of the Vltava river, has been a place of sport for many years. At the end of 17th century a wooden arena was erected in which dog hunts at animals were held. That is were the name Stvanice comes from, it means hunt.

With a population of over 1.2 million, Prague has been the political, cultural, and economic centre of the Czech state for over 1,100 years. The city has been included on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites since 1992.
