Phil Dalhausser looks to climb back to the top in beach volleyball

Phil Dalhausser

Lausanne, Switzerland, April 20, 2014 - He’s certainly the most dominant beach volleyball player in the United States, if not the world.

But 6-foot-9 Phil Dalhausser has noticed a worldwide trend, and it’s not exactly an upward one for him.

“There are these 7-foot monsters like the Dutch guys, a 7-foot blocker and a 6-8 defender, and the other (Dutch) team won the World Championship, and they’re 6-10 and 6-6,” Dalhausser said.

Not to worry.

“There are are some big boys out there, but where there’s a will, there’s a way,” Dalhausser said. “Every once in a while, I kind of have to flex my muscle. I used to be the biggest guy out there and now I’m not even close. There are probably like five 7-footers out there. They’re bigger and bigger, and the guys are getting more skilled. It’s tough.”

Dalhausser, now living in Ventura, and partner Sean Rosenthal of Redondo Beach took off for China on Saturday to begin their 2014 season. It’s the second year of a partnership that on paper looks like a golden combination, and it was at times.

But as much as Dalhausser has had to adapt to the competition, he had to adapt to the partnership and a position switch. Both of the players are natural left-side players, but Dalhausser took the right side in 2013.

Dalhausser and Rosenthal will begin their 2014 FIVB beach volleyball run at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Fuzhou Open, beginning Tuesday. The pair will then move onto their first FIVB Grand Slam of the season in Shanghai, China.
