Organisers of Moscow Grand Slam unveil plans for a memorable 2014 edition

Moscow, Russia, April 15, 2014 – A press conference was held on Monday at the premises of ‘Forward’ the official technical sponsor of the 2014 FIVB Grand Slam in Moscow.

The World Tour will stop in Moscow for the seventh consecutive year, with the tournament set to once again take place at the Dinamo sports centre at the Vodniy stadium from June 10 through 15.

The press conference was attended by the Tournament Director as well as FIVB and CEV Beach Volleyball Commission member Ilya Volodarskiy. The panel also included national federation delegate Marina Shcherbakova as well as Evgenia Ukolova,  one of Russia’s leading beach volleyball players and 2012 Olympian.

“On behalf of the FIVB and the Organising Committee of the Moscow Grand Slam I would like to thank all the sponsors and partners who have decided to support our tournament this year,” said Ilya Volodarskiy.

“This time the prize money has been increased to US$ 800,000 thereby setting an all-time record for the Moscow Grand Slam. The world’s best beach volleyball players are likely to come to Moscow in mid-June. We expect a large crowd especially since our competition will be held in the period people are used to.

“This year the tournament will take place during the four days off for public holidays here in Russia and therefore we expect that all the right conditions are set for a memorable event. We have prepared a lot of surprises for our fans, so I invite as many as possible to come to Vodniy stadium and be with us - they will not regret this. As for the tournament, there will be 10 Russian teams participating in the Grand Slam this year, five per gender.”

Noting that Russia will host two major international events this year, Marina Shcherbakova said, “As it was already the case last year, our Volley Grad complex in Anapa will host an FIVB Open from May 27 to June 1. We expect a good entry list for this event as well. On top of this, one stop of the Russian Championship will also take place in Anapa, before the tour stops in Moscow, while the end-of-year Russian Open Cup will take place in the Olympic city of Sochi.”

Russia’s beach volleyball star Evgenia Ukolova informed the media about the state of her preparations for the coming season and about the teams that will represent Russia in this year’s World Tour.

“This year our preparations followed a very unusual schedule. We started with the CEV indoor Satellite in Anapa before we travelled to Italy where we had the opportunity to play against some good Czech and German teams.

“At the same time the members of our men’s national team practiced in Tenerife and Qatar. In general our training camps went quite well. I hope that we will be able to achieve good results so as to please our fans in the near future. We all want to get a full house at the events that will take place in Russia this year because it is a great feeling to play in such conditions with your friends and relatives also in attendance.”

The FIVB World Tour will start on April 22 with the Fuzhou Open in China before the first Grand Slam of the year follows in Shanghai from April 29 through May 3. This year’s FIVB World Tour includes nine Grand Slam tournaments taking place in Shanghai, Moscow, Berlin, Stavanger, Gstaad, The Hague, Long Beach, Klagenfurt and Stare Jablonki.
