Transavia Grand Slam 2014 in three World Championship cities

A mock up of The Hague venue for the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships 2015. The three city concept is the first time an FIVB has been spread across multiple cities and will prove a good test for next year.

The Hague, the Netherlands, March 7, 2014 – The organisers of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Transavia Grand Slam in the Netherlands, which is due to take place from July 16 to 20, have confirmed that it will be played in three cities – Amsterdam, Apeldoorn and The Hague – as a test looking ahead to the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships, which the Netherlands will host in 2015.

This new innovative concept is the first time an FIVB beach volleyball event will be held in multiple cities, although the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships 2001 were held in multiple Lake Wörthersee villages around Klagenfurt, giving more people the opportunity to attend and with the same format planned for the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships 2015, providing a very useful testing ground for certain aspects of the organisation and giving more people the chance to participate in the FIVB’s premier beach volleyball event, which is staged every two years.

Having hosted four FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Opens in The Hague, the Netherlands staged their first Grand Slam last year, with a sequel set for this summer. The Transavia Grand Slam is the stage at which the best beach volleyball players in the world compete wand for the Netherlands’ Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen, the tournament will be their first major international appearance in front of their home crowd as reigning world champions following their triumph in Stare Jablonki last year.

The qualification rounds of the Transavia Grand Slam will be played on July 15 in Scheveningen in The Hague.  The next day, the qualified teams will move out to the other Dutch cities for the pool phase on Wednesday, July 16 and Thursday, July 17 with the exact competition schedule still to be ratified. The hosting cities are all assigned to host pools with six matches per pool every day in beach stadiums with a minimum of 1,000 seats.

The knock out phase of the Transavia Grand Slam will be staged in The Hague Beach Stadium in Scheveningen from Friday 18 to Sunday July 20.

The hofvijver
The Board of Aldermen of the Hague approved the realization of a beach volleyball stadium in ‘the Hofvijver’ (small pond in the centre of The Hague) during the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships 2015. The temporary stadium, with a capacity of 5,500 seats, will host various pool phase matches, all semifinals and the World Championship finals. The eye-catching stadium, in a spectacular setting next to the Dutch parliament, will be the epicentre of the beach volleyball world for more than a week.

Beach volleyball has a tradition of stadiums on special locations. The beach volleyball tournament at the London Olympics was played at Horse Guards Parade and in Rio de Janeiro the teams strive for the Olympic title on the famous beach of Copacabana. Of course, there is also Bondi Beach at the 2000 Olympic Games and Champ de Mars in Paris as previous iconic venues but still, the scope of a stadium on the water is a great coup for the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships of 2015 in the Netherlands.
