FIVB Beach Volleyball Open women’s event shines in Phuket
The second and last of two women’s FIVB Open events on the 2014 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour schedule, Thailand will once again present the FIVB Phuket Open on October 14 to 19. It will be the ninth time Thailand has hosted a FIVB World Tour event and the eighth time a women’s event will be played in Phuket.
China’s new team of Xinyi Xia/Chen Xue topped the podium in Phuket last year, with the silver medal going to USA’s new team of Emily Day/Summer Ross and the bronze medal to Brazilian sisters Carolina Salgado/Maria Clara Salgado.
Thailand has hosted a total of eight FIVB World Tour events (all women) over the last eight years with Phuket hosting the first six events and Bang Saen the site of the 2012 event before it returned to Phuket last year. The United States leads the medal count in Thai hosted competitions with 11 medals, followed by China with five and Brazil with three.
Phuket is one of the southern provinces of Thailand. Neighboring provinces are (from north clockwise) Phang Nga and Krabi, but as Phuket is an island, it has no land boundaries. Although somewhat smaller than the size of Singapore, Phuket is Thailand’s largest island amd is connected to the mainland by two bridges. It is situated off the west coast of Thailand in the Andaman Sea. Phuket formerly derived its wealth from tin and rubber, and enjoys a rich and colorful history. The island was on one of the major trading routes between India and China, and was frequently mentioned in foreign ship logs of Portuguese, French, Dutch and English traders. The region now derives much of its income from tourism.
The nine FIVB Beach Volleyball Opens on the 2014 FIVB World Tour include six double-gender, one men-only and two women-only tournaments, adding numerous possibilities for athletes to compete in high quality, FIVB international competition. Over the course of the year more Open events could be added to the schedule, ensuring that all five Confederations will host a FIVB event in 2014.
The 2014 FIVB World Ranking system will include FIVB Beach Volleyball Grand Slam and Open events along with additional pre-approved events at the inter-continental, continental and national levels.
Implemented in 2013, the format of all the FIVB Beach Volleyball international tournaments – whether FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships, FIVB Beach Volleyball Grand Slam or FIVB Beach Volleyball Open – are the same, featuring pool play followed by single elimination knockout rounds.
