Chennai, India to present FIVB Beach Volleyball Open in 2014
The sixth of seven double-gender Open events on the 2014 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour calendar, India will present its first FIVB World Tour event when it hosts the FIVB Chennai Open from November 25 to 30.
While the event will mark the inaugural visit by the FIVB World Tour, India has hosted two double gender FIVB Challenger events in Chennai in 2008 and in 2010. The city also hosted the Asian Beach Volleyball Championships in 2013.
In the men’s FIVB Chennai Challenger events, teams from Brazil and Russia won the two gold medals, while in the women's tournaments Thailand and Germany captured the two top podium spots.
In the two men’s FIVB Chennai Challenger events, six countries won at least one medal. Joining Brazil on the podium in 2008 were teams from Italy and Canada while standing alongside Russia in 2010 were teams from Turkey and the United States.
Overall in the two women’s FIVB Chennai Challenger events, four countries earned medals. In 2008, Thailand won both the gold and silver medals with Austria earning the bronze. In 2010, Germany mirrored Thailand’s effort by winning gold and silver with the United States.
Chennai is the capital city of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Located on the Coromandel Coast off the Bay of Bengal in southeast India, Chennai is the biggest industrial and commercial center in south India, and a major cultural, economic and educational center.
With its population of over 4.68 million residents, Chennai is the sixth-largest city in India.
The 11 FIVB Beach Volleyball Opens on the 2014 FIVB World Tour include seven double-gender, two men-only and two women-only tournaments, adding numerous possibilities for athletes to compete in high quality, FIVB international competition. All five Confederations will again host a FIVB event in 2014.
The 2014 FIVB World Ranking system will include FIVB Beach Volleyball Grand Slam and Open events along with additional pre-approved events at the inter-continental, continental and national levels.
Implemented in 2013, the format of all the FIVB Beach Volleyball international tournaments – whether FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships, FIVB Beach Volleyball Grand Slam or FIVB Beach Volleyball Open – are the same, featuring pool play followed by single elimination knockout rounds.
