FIVB Beach Volleyball Open event for men planned for La Réunion
Hoping to continue its aggressive expansion into new territories for competition while adding to its growing pool of international athletes, the FIVB has announced plans in continuing association with the National Volleyball Federation of France to stage a men’s only Open event this year on the French Island of La Réunion.
The event will be held December 3 to 7 and would be the second and final tournament for men only this year and the tenth of eleven FIVB Open events on the 2014 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour schedule. The 2014 FIVB international calendar of events also includes 10 FIVB Grand Slam events, the new FIVB Grand Slam Final on the FIVB World Tour along with four age-group FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships.
Overall, in the history of the FIVB World Tour, the National Volleyball Federation of France has hosted 41 total tournaments (24 men’s and 17 women’s). For the men, Marseille leads the way with 16 events, followed by Paris with four and with one each men’s FIVB World Tour events have been held in Cap d’ Agde, La Baule, Pornichet and Sete. For the women, 13 tournaments have been held in Marseille and four in Paris. The last tournament in France was a double-gender FIVB World Tour event in 2010.
Men’s champion in 2010 at the Marseille tournament was China’s Penggen Wu/Linyin Xu, with the silver medal going to Latvia’s Martins Plavins/Janis Smedins and the bronze medal to Poland’s Grzegorz Fijalek/Mariusz Prudel.
In the 24 FIVB World Tour men’s events in France, Brazil won 17 gold medals followed by the United States with three and winning one gold medal each were teams from Argentina, China, Norway and Switzerland.
The current eleven FIVB Beach Volleyball Opens on the 2014 FIVB World Tour include seven double-gender, two men-only and two women-only tournaments, adding numerous possibilities for athletes to compete in high quality, FIVB international competition. Over the course of the year more Open events could be added to the schedule ensuring that all five Confederations will host a FIVB event in 2014.
The 2014 FIVB World Ranking system will include FIVB Beach Volleyball Grand Slam and Open events along with additional pre-approved events at the inter-continental, continental and national levels.
La Réunion is a French island with a population of 840,974 inhabitants (as of January 2013) located in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar, about 200 kilometers (120 miles) southwest of Mauritius, the nearest island.
Administratively, Réunion is one of the overseas departments of France. Like the other overseas departments, Réunion is also one of the 27 regions of France (being an overseas region) and an integral part of the Republic with the same status as those situated on the European mainland.

Implemented in 2013, the format of all the FIVB Beach Volleyball international tournaments – whether FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships, FIVB Beach Volleyball Grand Slam or FIVB Beach Volleyball Open – are the same, featuring pool play followed by single elimination knockout rounds.
