Alison and Emanuel announce split

Alison and Emanuel who won this year World Cup Final in Campinas announced their split on Thursday

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, November 29, 2013 - Brazil’s Alison and Emanuel, one of the most successful beach volleyball partners in recent times have announced that they will be parting ways.

Alison and Emanuel, who won virtually every possible title and also a silver medal at the London Olympic Games in 2012, will not be seen playing together next year and will play their last match at the fifth stage of the Circuito Banco do Brazil Open 2013/2014 in São José (SC).

In 2010, 38-year-old Emanuel Rego – already a leading name in beach volleyball – decided to join forces with the capable Alison, then 24. At that time it was difficult to imagine that together they would stamp their mark in such a remarkable way on the sport.

The year 2011 was a defining one for the duo as they won the World Championship and World Tour season title and topped the table on the Brazilian National Tour and the Pan American Cup. Their hopes of continuing with their gold medal streak were dashed in 2012 and they had to settle for closing the Olympic cycle with a silver medal at London 2012.

They came back in 2013 to win the World Cup Final and won a number of events on the 2013/2014 Brazilian National Tour.

Alison said he had a conversation with Emanuel just over a month ago in Rio de Janeiro about possibly bringing the partnership to an end.

"I explained to Emanuel that as I've already been out of the house for seven years, I wanted to return to Victoria to be closer to my family. He understood me. Emanuel is a father, a friend, a brother and  someone from whom I learned a lot and who I respect a lot. While many partnerships end in fights in our case it has not. Instead there is affection and gratitude for all that we have had. I have matured a great deal with him and we have made history together,” he said.

For his part Emanuel had this to say; “We played together for four, wonderful years. We had many victories but it was a very intense time. Prior to the start of the Olympic cycle, I needed someone to motivate me and I needed energy. And with Alison and all his vitality we formed a winning pair. We achieved our objectives and saw the results of our work and dedication, sacrifice and training. We have to thank our sponsors for supporting us for so many years as well as the Brazilian Volleyball Confederation. We also thank our fans for pushing us and encouraging us all the time and our families who were always at our side.”
