Smedins and Samoilovs one win away from winning World Tour ranking

Durban, South Africa, December 13, 2013 – Janis Smedins and Aleksandrs Samoilovs are one win away from becoming the World Tour ranking winners in Durban. The Latvians had a narrow escape against Polish youngsters Dawid Popek and Pawel Pelka (21-11 18-21 15-13) in their last pool match at the FIVB Beach Volleyball Durban Open, but survived and reached the last 16 on Friday.

 

The quarterfinals will be enough to stay ahead of Brazil’s Pedro Solberg and Bruno Oscar Schmidt to secure the overall World Tour title. Besides Pedro and Bruno two more Brazilian teams made the second round: Alison/Vitor Felipe and Thiago/ Brandao.

 

In the women’s competition Austria’s 24th seeded Sabine Swoboda and Bianca Zass surprised friends and foes by reaching the last 16. As did U19 world champion Eduarda Santos Lisboa and her partner Thais Rodrigues Ferreira from Brazil.

 

The Brazilian youngsters will play compatriots Fernanda and Elize Maia for a quarterfinal spot. The Austrians are up against Thailand’s Radarong/Udomchavee.

Russia’s Evgenia Ukolova and Maria Prokopeva knocked out their compatriots in eliminations after an ‘unlucky’ loss in their last pool game on Friday at the FIVB Beach Volleyball Durban Open. More

 

Greece’s Arvaniti/Karagkouni upset second seeded Russians

 

Greece’s Vasiliki Arvaniti and Panagiota Karagkouni reached their first important FIVB milestone at the FIVB Beach Volleyball Durban Open on Friday. For the first time since they partnered up at the beginning of this year the Greek pair reached the second elimination round. More

 

Out of respect for former South African president Nelson Mandela, who will be buried on Sunday, the semifinals and finals of the Durban Open were rescheduled. Originally they were set for Saturday evening, but due to problems with the lighting they have to be played during daylight.

 

Matches start at 6.00 on Saturday morning. The women’s semis are scheduled for 9.30 and 10.30 followed by the men’s semifinals at 11.30 and 12.30. The bronze medal match for the women will start at 13.30, the men’s at 14.20. The finals are played at 15.10 and 16.00.

 

The winners in both the men’s and women’s competition earn 11.000 US dollars. The silver medallists split 8.000 and third place earns 6.000.

 

The 2013 Durban Open is the fifth FIVB event in South Africa, after editions in 1995, 1996, 2004 and 2005. All previous events except the one in 1996 were held in Cape Town.

 

Durban is the third largest city in South Africa after Johannesburg and Cape Town. With a population of almost 3.5 million it is also the largest city in the province of KwaZulu-Natal and is located on the east coast of the African continent.
