Xiamen upgraded to become 10th Grand Slam of the year

The Xiamen Grand Slam will now featrue both men and women and will start one day earlier on October 22

Lausanne, Switzerland, September 27, 2013 – The International Volleyball Federation is pleased to announce that the Xiamen Open has been upgraded to a double-gender Grand Slam event.

The Xiamen Open, initially a women’s only Open event, has been modified in an effort to maintain the FIVB’s goal for 2013 to provide greater opportunities for players and beach volleyball fans after the organisers of the Beijing Grand Slam were forced to withdraw the tournament from the 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour calendar due to financial difficulties.

With the tournament in Xiamen, the original number of 10 FIVB Beach Volleyball Grand Slams for this year will still be maintained providing yet another opportunity for players to compete in high-level international competition in China.

The competition dates for the Xiamen Grand Slam have been extended by one day with the men’s competition taking place from October 22 to 26 and the women’s from October 23 to 27. Overall the majority of the conditions of a Grand Slam will be implemented, including prize money of $120,000 and bonus pool of $100,000 per gender while the number of teams in the qualification tournament (normally 24 for a Grand Slam) will be maintained at 32 per gender as per an agreement with the promoter and the China Volleyball Association (CVA), although the size of the stadium will remain at 1,600 capacity due to the short time frame before the start of competition.

The Xiamen Grand Slam will be the third beach volleyball event organised in China this year, after the Fuzhou Open and the Shanghai Grand Slam. The Fuzhou Open, which launched this year’s beach volleyball season, saw China’s Chen Xue and Zhang Xi thrill the home crowd sweeping gold in the women’s competition while USA’s Sean Rosenthal and Philip Dalhausser won gold in the men’s.

The Shanghai Grand Slam, which took place soon after saw Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson continue to fly the US flag taking gold in the men’s competition, while Brazil’s Talita Antunes da Rocha claimed the honours for Brazil in the women’s competition with new partner Taiana de Souza Lima.

The next event on the FIVB beach Volleyball World Tour is the Sao Paulo Grand Slam, which will run from October 8 to 13.

The Xiamen Grand Slam will be followed by the Phuket Open, scheduled to take place in Thailand from October 29 to November 3. The Durban Open will round off a very busy year for beach volleyball when South Africa plays host to the last event of the year from December 11 to 15.

Xiamen, also known as Amoy, has a population of 3.5m and is situated city on the southeast (Taiwan Strait) coast of the People's Republic of China.
