FIVB Moscow Grand Slam pool play set to go


After five year at the Poklonnaya Gora the Moscow Grand Slam has moved to a new location: Vodny Stadium

Moscow, Russia, August 21, 2013 – The 6th edition of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Moscow Grand Slam is set to go. On Wednesday eight teams from each gender advanced after two rounds of qualification to complete the 32 teams main draw pool play.

 

In the women’s competition Dutch team Marloes Wesselink and Laura Bloem advanced as lucky losers after the withdrawal of the Czech team Marketa Slukova and Kristyna Kolocova.

 

The main draw for both genders starts on Thursday, with two rounds of pool play in the women’s competition and one in the men’s. The semifinals and medal matches for both men and women are scheduled for Sunday.

 

From the reserve list to main draw again for Tomatis and Ranghieri

 

Andrea Tomatis and Alex Ranghieri finished a spectacular 4th at the Berlin Grand Slam just a few days ago, coming all the way from the reserve list. And the Italians are planning to do that all over again in Russia this week, at the sixth edition of the Moscow Grand Slam.

 

The first hurdle has been taken, on Wednesday they were one of eight qualification teams advancing to main draw. Just like in Berlin they had been moved up from the reserve list. More

 

Do or die for Germany’s Bieneck and Grossner

 

It was ‘do or die’ for Victoria Bieneck and Julia Grossner on Wednesday on the first day of the FIVB Moscow Grand Slam. The German team finished 9th in Berlin just two weeks ago, but had to start in qualification at the sixth edition of the Russian Grand Slam.

 

Under 23 champion Bieneck and her partner Grossner had a bye in the first qualification round as second seeded, but needed three sets (21-13 17-21 15-12) to overcome USA’s Heather Hughes and Lane Carico in the final round. More

 

Double joy for Greece, sad day for the Dutch

 

Georgios Kotsilianos and Nikos Zoupanis upset top seeded Dutch team Reinder Nummerdor and Richard Schuil in the final qualification round of the FIVB Moscow Grand Slam on Wednesday. It was double joy for the Greeks as it was also the first time they qualified for main draw.

 

For Dutch veteran Richard Schuil this might have well been his last match on the World Tour, he said afterwards. “If we have to play qualification again in Beijing, I am finished.” More

 

Moscow is hosting a FIVB World Tour Grand Slam for the sixth year in a row. The Russian capital also organized men’s-only Opens in 1998 and 1999. St. Petersburg hosted double gender events from 2005 till 2007.

 

After five years at the Poklonnaya Gora (Victory Park) the Moscow Grand Slam moved to a new venue, the Vodny Stadium. The stadium is part of a sports complex located in the northern part of Moscow, on the banks of the Moscow canal.

 

The Moscow Grand Slam is the 8th out of 10 Grand Slams this season. After Moscow the World Tour makes two more stops, in Beijing (October 1-6) and Sao Paulo (October 8-13).
