Corrientes Grand Slam officially launched

It is the first time that Argentina has hosted an FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Grand Slam event

Buenos Aires, Argentina, April 25, 2013 - The official presentation of the most important event in Argentine beach volleyball history - the Corrientes Grand Slam due to take place from May 22 to 26 - took place on Wednesday.

The INPROTUR (Instituto de Promoción Turística - Tourist Promotion Enterprise) Director Leonardo Boto, City of Corrientes City Hall Mayor Carlos Mauricio "Camau" Espinola and the Argentine Volleyball Federation (FEVA) Under-Treasurer Fabian Ramon were all present.

All agreed on the strong sporting and touristic benefit the event will provide, pointing out that the best 64 beach volleyball pairs of the world would be onsite whilst also being broadcast live around the world.

Data:

* For the first time in history, Argentina will hold the most important event of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour.

* The Beach Volleyball Grand Slam will be hosted May 22 to 26 at Playa Arazaty, on the south coast of the city of Corrientes with the presence of the best ranked 64 teams in the world (32 per gender).

* The International Volleyball Federation, the Argentine Volleyball Federation and TURICENTRO, as exclusively sponsor of the event (named by the International Volleyball Federation) are part of the Organizing Committee that will carry out the event with international standard together with Fenix Entrertainment Group, as commercial enterprise named in this event.

* Argentina organized since the year 1999 different stages of the International Circuit: (Mar del Plata, 2004), Satellite (Puerto Madero, Buenos Aires, 2005) and Open (Mar del Plata, 1999 and 2000) and this time it will organize the Grand Slam, Corrientes 2013.

The FIVB World Tour Grand Slam is the most important beach volleyball event in the world outside of the World Championships giving the teams the highest points. Sharing this honour with Corrientes this year is Shanghai (China), La Hague (the Netherlands), Rome (Italy, Long Beach (USA), Gstaad (Switzerland), Berlin (Germany), Moscow (Russia), Beijing (China) and San Paulo (Brazil).

Corrientes, a city 1,000km north of Buenos Aires, is the second stop of the 2013 World Tour, taking place just two weeks after the season opening Shanghai Grand Slam.

Local favourites Maria Zonta and Ana Gallay will aim to build on their experience from the London 2012 Olympic Games, but are likely to face stiff competition in the women’s competition from Olympic silver medallists Jennifer Kessy and April Ross from USA, China’s Zhang Xi and Chen Xue and Germany’s Ilka Semmler and Katrin Holtwick, who won their first Tour gold medal at the end of 2012.

The men’s competition is far more open, with a number of partnerships out to gain early World Tour points. Phil Dalhausser won Olympic gold in 2008 with Todd Rogers, but is now playing with Sean Rosenthal and they will be trying to build some early momentum ahead of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships that take place in July.

London 2012 Olympic gold medallist Julius Brink is another player starting out with a new partner, in his case Sebastian Fuchs, following Jonas Reckermann’s retirement on account of injury. Italians Paolo Nicolai and Daniele Lupo will be aiming to build on an impressive end to 2012, while world champions Emanuel Rego and Alison Cerutti will be out to find form ahead of the defence of their world crown later in the year.

The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour 2013 will run over a six month period and features 10 mixed-gender tournaments across four of the five confederations, the last of which takes place in Sao Paolo, Brazil from October 9 to 13.

The calendar also features the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships that take place in Stare Jablonki, Poland from July 1 to 7.

Following the completion of the Corrientes Grand Slam the World Tour moves to The Netherlands for The Hague Grand Slam that runs from June 11 to 16.
