Lausanne, Switzerland, August 19, 2012 – Clemens Doppler and Alexander Horst of Austria beat the Americans Jacob Gibb and Sean Rosenthal 2-0 (21-19, 21-17), while Latvia’s Martins Plavins and Janis Smedins came back from a set down to upset USA’s Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser 2-1 (17-21, 21-15, 15-8) in the men’s semifinal matches at Stare Jablonski, Poland.
Rogers and Dalhausser had been favourites to win the tournament, but the Latvian pair, riding high off their bronze-medal performance at the London Olympics, refused to fold. After a thrilling 57-minute match, they move on to face the Austrian team of Doppler and Horst in the final of the Mazury Orlen Grand Slam.
The Mazury Orlen Grand Slam is the ninth of nine mixed gender tournaments on the 2012 FIVB SWATCH World Tour and the final men’s tournament of the year. The winning side will leave with the largest share from a pot of $300,000 per gender.
