74 men's teams set for FIVB SWATCH World Tour Brasília Open

USA's Phil Dalhausser, left, and Todd Rogers enjoy their gold medal victory over Brazil's Alison Cerutti/Emanuel Rego as the 2012 FIVB Beach Volleyball SWATCH World Tour will again start with the Brasília Open.

Brasília, Brazil, April 12, 2012—Led by Brazil’s 2011 season and world champions Alison Cerutti/Emanuel Rego, a total of 74 men’s and 69 women’s teams from 35 countries have officially entered next-week’s season-opening event on the 2012 FIVB Beach Volleyball SWATCH World Tour calendar in Brazil. The road to the 2012 London Olympic Games resumes as 16 of the 24 teams in each gender will be determined through year-long Olympic rankings on the FIVB SWATCH World Tour.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary of the first FIVB-sanctioned event (Rio de Janeiro in 1987), the international beach volleyball circuit begins for the fourth consecutive season with the US$380,000 Brasília Open to be held this Sunday through next Sunday (April 22) on The Esplanada dos Ministérios in Quadrante 1 as the Brazilian capital will be celebrating its 52nd anniversary next Saturday (April 21). The tournament will be the first of nine double-gender events on the 2012 schedule. Women’s action starts with country quota matches this Sunday for duos from Brazil, and  Germany while the men’s competition begins next Tuesday with country quota matches for Brazil, Canada, Germany and the United States.

During the April 21st Brasília anniversary celebrations, crowds of more than 1-million are expected to attend various holiday activities surrounding the FIVB SWATCH World Tour event.  Brazil has staged a FIVB SWATCH World Tour event every year since the start of the international series for men in 1989 and women in 1992. This will be the 33rd men’s event and 28th women’s tournament on the FIVB SWATCH World Tour held in Brazil. It will also be the 14th time that the FIVB SWATCH World Tour will have its season-opening event in Brazil. In the 33 men’s tournaments, Brazil has earned 59 total medals -18 gold, 21 silver and 20 bronze.

The top men’s team entering the 2012 season, Brazil’s reigning FIVB SWATCH World Tour Champions Alison/Emanuel earned five gold medals last season including the FIVB Beach Volleyball SWATCH World Championships in Rome. While the legendary Emanuel has 75 career FIVB gold medals and 10 FIVB SWATCH World Tour titles with five different teammates in an 18-year, 214-match FIVB career, the Alison/Emanuel tandem is still developing its sand legs as they march to an expected spot in the 2012 London Olympic Games. Having played in just 23 tournaments together, Alison/Emanuel have earned five gold medals, four silvers, six bronze and 16 final four placements while compiling an impressive 115-28 won-loss match record.

Countries with teams officially entered in the Brasília Open double-gender event are Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, China, Columbia, Denmark, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, United States, Uruguay, Vanuatu and Venezuela.

“Even if the Olympics are the most prestigious tournament in the world, I am not anxiously thinking about it right now,” said the legendary veteran Emanuel, who has earned a record of $2,234,885 in career FIVB earnings and has represented Brazil in the last four Olympic Games. “With the experience I have now, I have learned that we need to focus in each step in the preparation and we are making it very well so far. I am a very competitive person and I prefer not thinking at all about what I have done so far. I always want to give my best in every single tournament and I can’t do that if I am looking ahead. That’s why the FIVB SWATCH World Tour is vitally important to Alison and I as we continue to develop as a team.”

Besides Brazil’s Alison/Emanuel, also among the top teams in the men’s event will be the reigning Olympic and 2010 FIVB SWATCH World Tour champions Phil Dalhausser/Todd Rogers of the United States and 2009 FIVB SWATCH World Champions Julius Brink/Jonas Reckermann of Germany. Brink/Reckermann also won the season title in 2009 and the German duo has 22 final fours in the 39 FIVB tournaments they have played.

Dalhausser/Rogers, who have 21 career FIVB SWATCH World Tour gold medals as a tandem, earned their first FIVB SWATCH World Tour point championship in 2010 by winning a FIVB-record nine gold medals in the 12 events they entered. The Americans started their golden season with a victory in the 2010 Brasília Open and defeated Alison/Emanuel in the season-opener in Brazil in both 2010 and 2011.  In 49 world tour events as a team, besides their 21 gold medals, Dalhausser/Rogers have earned seven silver medals, eight bronze medals and 38 final fours with a 266-58 FIVB match record for an 82.1 percent winning percentage, the highest among active FIVB teams.

Besides Brazil’s Alison/Emanuel (five) and USA’s Dalhausser/Rogers (four), the other 2011 gold medal men’s teams who will be competing in Brasília will be Brazil’s Ricardo Santos, Marcio Araujo, Benjamin Insfran and Pedro Cunha. Last season, Santos won one gold with Marcio (Stavenger, Norway) and two with Cunha (Klagenfurt, Austria, The Hague, Netherlands) while Marcio also won a gold medal with Benjamin (Aland, Finland). For this season, Ricardo will start the season with Cunha, Marcio with Pedro Salgado, and Benjamin with Alvaro Filho.

Among the other 2011 FIVB SWATCH World Tour podium finishers scheduled to play in Brazil are China’s Penggen Wu/Linyin Xu, USA’s Jake Gibb/Sean Rosenthal, USA’s Matt Fuerbringer/Nick Lucena, and Brazil’s Rhooney Ferramenta who will play this year with Thiago Santos Barbosa after winning a bronze medal in Africa last year with Pedro Salgado. China’s Wu/Xu won the bronze medal in last year’s Brasília Open.

The gold medal teams in each gender in the Brasília Open will each split $30,000, the silver $21,000, the bronze $15,000 and fourth place $11,200. The women’s medal matches will be held next Friday, April 20 and the men’s medal matches will be played on Sunday, April 22. Here are the official men’s entries as of April 12:
