The 13th and final men’s event on the 2012 FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Tour arrives on the shores of Morocco for the second time in its two-decade-plus history. The $190,000 Agadir Open will be a men’s only event held on October 2-7. Prior to last year the north-African country had only ever welcomed FIVB beach volleyball action on three previous occasions, with FIVB challenger events being held in the country in 2004, 2005 and 2006 and is only the second country on the continent to stage a world tour event following tournaments in Cape Town and Durban, South Africa. A bustling tourist city, Agadir sits on the coast and is a regular destination for European holiday makers. Famous for its sea food it has a population of over 200,000 and is close to the foot of the Atlas Mountains. At Rue de la Plage, Corniche, Agadir, Morocco. Dutch duo Reinder Nummerdor and Richard Schuil won their first event in 2011 and their seventh career gold medal together in an all European final, defeating Germans Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann in three hard-fought sets, 21-18, 21-13 and 15-12. The victory kept Europe’s streak of eight straight seasons with at least one men’s team winning on the FIVB SWATCH World Tour, dating back to 2004. This was also the seventh time in 2011 that four different countries competed in the men’s semifinals matching the 2010 season and just behind 2008 when it happened eight times in 21 events. Brazil’s Rhooney Ferramenta won his first world tour medal here last year. He and his partner Pedro Solberg beat Matt Fuerbringer and Nick Lucena in the bronze medal match in two sets. Under the watchful eye of French referee Marc Berard, who whistled his thousandth match, the audience on the fully packed centre court got to see an excellent final with thrilling rallies.
