The Hague, the Netherlands, August 27, 2011 – To the delight of the Dutch audience, home team Reinder Nummerdor and Richard Schuil are one of the finalists of the FIVB Swatch World Tour HP Beach Open in The Hague. The Dutch duo will play Brazil’s Pedro Cunha and Ricardo Santos or Russia’s Yaroslav Koshkarev and Konstantin Semenov for the gold medal on Sunday. The second semifinal was postponed due to thunderstorms and will be played Sunday morning at 9.45.

The Dutch have reached their first final of the season, the fifth place in Gstaad was their best 2011 finish until now. If Nummerdor (34) and Schuil (39) win they will be the second oldest team to win a major event. In the past, three-time European champions Nummerdor and Schuil played nine gold medal matches on the World Tour, winning six. One of them was first place in The Hague in 2009.

The eight-seeded Dutch had a sluggish start this season but remained unbeaten so far in this tournament. After their surprising third round victory over top seeded Grzegorz Fijalek/Mariusz Prudel earlier in the tournament, they sent fifth seeded Russians Koshkarev/Semenov to the loser’s bracket in the fourth round Saturday morning. Being slow starters they lost the first set, but recovered and secured their semifinal spot in 44 minutes: 19-21 21-9 15-13.

Their opponents Petr Benes/Premysl Kubala lost their fourth round match to Cunha/Ricardo in two sets (21-11 21-17) and had to play an extra match in the loser’s bracket against Italy’s Paolo Nicolai/Daniele Lupo (21-16 21-18).

In the evening, on a packet centre court, the Czechs did not stand a chance against the rested Dutch team. Both Nummerdor and Schuil were serving strong, hitting aces all around. They took a six points lead right away and held on to that until 21-15. At the end of the second set the Dutch made some little mistakes, which allowed Benes and Kubala to come back to 19-19. But a spike and a kill block by Schuil ended the match at 21-19.

“Our serving tactic worked out well”, Nummerdor said afterwards. “We played them once before and they are very sly, hard to beat. But I guess we played with more variety. We are very happy to play in the final tomorrow because we are on home soil. But also because it has been a while since we played our last final. It will be a good ending of a mediocre season, especially when we win. We are certainly on our way up with bronze at the European championship, gold in the nationals and now silver or gold.”

The Dutch have no preference for their opponent in the final. “We stand a better chance against the Russians, but for the audience a final against Brazil would be wonderful”, said Nummerdor. Brazil’s Cunha and Ricardo are a new team. The Hague is their third tournament together, but they already won the Klagenfurt Grand Slam a few weeks ago. At the HP Beach Open they won al four main draw matches in straight sets.

Sunday morning they are up against Koshkarev and Semenov, who they played one time before in pool play in Klagenfurt (21-17 21-17). The Russians made it to the final four by beating Emiel Boersma/Daan Spijkers from the Netherlands in three sets (21-16 18-21 16-14). After the semifinal the men’s tournament continues with the bronze medal match at 12.00, the final is scheduled for 16.00.

The first edition of the FIVB Swatch World Tour in 2009 was, as earlier mentioned, won by Nummerdor/Schuil. Last year lucky losers Casey Jennings/Kevin Wong from USA captured the gold by beating Benjamin Insfran/Bruno Oscar Schmidt in the final. USA’s Matt Fuerbringer/Nick Lucena took the bronze.

The HP Beach Open is the 13th stage of the men’s 2011 FIVB Swatch World Tour. The 14th and final event of the season is scheduled for October 4-9 in Agadir, Morocco. Brazil’s Alison Cerutti/Emanuel Rego captured the 2011 World Tour title, their first together as a team.
